Re: Welcome to What's On Your Easel......September 2018

Sunken City Dreaming, 30x20, oil on cradled panel. Gift/commission for a friend. Sorry about the glare! It also has green/teal notes that my phone camera isn't picking up.

Aim was to straddle the boundary between representational and abstract. I'm not sure how successful I was.

technical notes: underlying ground is white. the blue is pthalo gs, I used layers and thicker application to generate shadows. Used buff titanium for the glow, along with cobalt yellow & cobalt teal for the highlights. I was really happy with the mid-hue lower key yellow cobalt yellow gave me and how it mixed into the teal & pthalo.

Nice work, everyone!

Dark paintings are hard to photograph, esp if they are wet or varnished.
I painted until 8 tonight. I was stalled out on the cabin and needed to paint something, so I started a new one.

Michael that's looking so good buddy. Your work has grown to be very consistent, your approach and results speak volumes. Keep up the great work.

tpriest: Looking very polished to me, very vibrant work.
p_nathan: I really like it, there is very attractive abstact quality to the work and yet it still feels like it could represent something.

Michael, it is such a joy to watch your paintings come to life. I was in Santa Fe week before last, and while I wasn't impressed by the city (too much like Palm Springs), I enjoyed the architecture and a hike we took up Medio Canyon to see the waterfalls, and I always enjoy the scenery as I drive through New Mexico. Do you find much in Kansas to inspire you yet?

same WIP as last month. had an accident starting painting her back so the shoulder blade is weird; the ear is really weird. the upper choppy part is fun if you can see it, but it doesn't fit here, going to wipe it. this is the dark stages.

Re: Welcome to What's On Your Easel......September 2018

Great start Ozi. Before you go much further, check her right (your left) nostril, it looks low (ie, the perpestive is off). It can be difficult to catch things that need correcting when you have been staring at a painting as you work, especially portraits. Try holding a hand mirror up to it and looking at it in reverse, it helps a lot! Your portraiture is improving overall though! This is going to be a great one.

Thanks @mtpalms for this feedback. I was really struggling with her nose. Now I can see it clearly.

Thanks plenty.

Re: Welcome to What's On Your Easel......September 2018

I wanted to get most of the canvas covered before posting here. I took a short trip to Santa Fe a couple weeks ago, and this is an iconic sign along Rte 66. I have seen it often in the 30 years I have lived out here, just never stopped to take a picture. The light was perfect and my traveling companions all wanted to stop, so I finally got around to it. 40" x 30"
