I'll tell you, the little storm troop in the clear glass vase is SUPER, not to mention everything else.
Looking forward my friend. May the force be with you.
Derek

Thanks my friend, I'm working on all the little facets of the glass dish right now, it will really 'flatter' the grapes when finished

Appreciate the kind words, the grapes took a lot of time but I'm very satisfied with them.

Thanks Delo, I appreciate the very kind words, and I'm glad you stopped in. You've done great work around here recently and you always have something intelligent to add to any discussion.

It would be my worst nightmare to attempt to paint that realistic but I can certainly appreciate your beautiful work.

Thanks, all the detail is my bread and butter. I get really locked in and focused when I'm painting a particularly detailed area.

Thanks Paul for the kind words and well wishes. Hopefully I can sway some folks into the world of taking 3 days to paint a grape.

Thanks so much, all this fruit really requires many value and color changes. Plus a whole extra step for textures, one I haven't done yet on anything but the grapes.

Thank you Ju-Ju, if you like my work you can look up my name and click on 'find all threads started by Alan P. in OC' and see the rest of my WIPs.

You'll get a glimpse of what I consider a 'finished product' and all the final details and steps. The only things finished on this painting are the background, vase, 1 stormtrooper, the flower, and the grapes .

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Hey folks,
Thought I'd show an update if where I am on the painting; Since posting last I've concentrated on the main glass bowl in which the grapes sit. There are actually 2 glass bowls, 1 inside another, to give the painting more 'oomph' and showcase the glass reflections and refraction more. On to the pics!

First, the whole thing (nothing new since the last post but the glass dish):

Now for some close-ups of the glass dish for my fellow detail lovers:

Pretty cool close-ups, huh?

Most of the work done on the bowl was with a 0/3 synthetic Escoda Prado brush. This bowl was a challenge in many ways; the darks in the middle were very difficult to discern in the ref. photo, I had to get the curves and proportions of the dish perfect, etc. but it was a lot of fun to paint. Looking forward to the next dish!

I think I'm going to start another thread and talk about this subject in more detail, but here's some insight into how hard it sometimes is to interpret a photo:

Original photo:

My interpretation of it:

I tried to make this an animated GIF but WC screwed it up upon loading, so you're stuck with the still pictures. Anyway, any comments or questions are welcome as always. Cheers!

OK: you had to put a difficult dish within a difficult dish....how dare you? Just amazingly good, my friend. Indeed an inspiration.
Carry on. Master.

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Your coice of colors for the green grapes is much more comnvincing than the photo.

Just now noticed the strom trooper on top of the strawberry.

This has been a lot of fun to watch, Alan. Thank you.

I've just now saw this thread, Alan. Absolutely wonderful. As Sam Gamgee said, "Well, sir if I could grow potatoes like that, I'd call myself a gardener."

Do you have light coming from above when taking that photo Alan?
If so, a polarizing filter would stop most of that glare.
Wonderful stuff, ... as usual.

I like your grapes much better than the ones in the photograph! And BTW, you are crazy for even considering painting something like this... I'd have lost my mind at the third grape or so. I admire your commitment and dedication.

That you didn't change the glare that is there in real life, makes it a notch closer to reality, amazing work for sure.
