Re: A Handful of Ink Blotches

these are really great - anything new in art was always despised by those clinging to the status quo - the Impressionists were reviled as stopping at the ebauche (sketch stage), Whistler accused of 'throwing a pot of paint in the face of the public' for his wonderful painting of fireworks.

I'm sure the old masters would have bee experimenting with digital if it were available. It's just another way of working

Re: A Handful of Ink Blotches

Provenceaquarelle: Thanks. I'm a huge lover of crows myself, so it's nice to learn they are the symbol of Lisbon. What great taste.

Eyepaint: I've come across quite a few different deviations from the same rhyme. I just picked my favorite because I like the way it ends
.
Vmrs: Much appreciated.

Vhere: I very much agree. Whistler's Nocturne in Black and Gold is one of my favorite paintings to just loose myself in. It's funny, because I'm reading a .pdf scan of John Ruskin's The Elements of Drawing at the moment, on my lunch breaks. It's a bit stuffy and outdated, but that's what I'm enjoying about it the most. His Lectures on Landscape is very much worth a read. I think maybe his mind was just too caught up in the classical sense to deal with Turner taking the more exploratory path that he did. Whistler's The Gentle Art of Making Enemies is so full of that old whit and barb that I love so much.

Managed to get lucky and park next to a gloriously gnarled tree where I was working, last week. Took a few sessions, but I wish I hadn't started with the green hatching. It really need to flow up and envelope the upper left, but I cannot justify the time.
