I've never done a handshake deal, ever.
I would never sue for payment, so more legalese forms are not useful to me, and I think are potentially off putting.
I've seen some recommended contracts that were worded to expect the client would hate the art, very alarming.
As long as I get the art back, I would refund. I personally do not want my art out there, grudgingly paid for by threat of lawsuit. And they don't get it in their hands until fully paid for.
I wonder how often this is happening to other pros, that they get stiffed? If it's often, then I would delve into the "why". Where you find clients? The quality? The lack of communication? Not being confident enough to get your money upfront? Or what?
