Re: Traveler (knife #2)

Hi jumper. Great painting. Just one comment tho. When shapes go off the canvas, they look light. Because they've broken through the frame, it implies movement. So, for me, they look as if they're floating upwards. Should you add a bit more black to the bottom right corner, it would suggest more weight and anchor the shapes down.
Think your works getting better and better and I love the way you use colour.

Re: Traveler (knife #2)

Thanks for the comment Cory, The work is not completely clear because my camera is acting up. I may have to buy a new one before it's all over. Thanks for the idea of a dark blue. I will keep that in mind on the next one.

Hi Waggler, Almost missed your post. What a great point you make about artwork. I'm going to keep that in mind on future work. I may have to PM you (if you don't mind) and ask you some questions.

Thanks for saying my work is getting better and that you like the colors. Makes me really happy!

Have a great day!

I love the spashes of colour! They make the whole composition vibrant and full of movement. The black is a bit severe I think but I still think it is a worthy piece. Ady

Thank you Ady, Thank you for your comment. I understand that some people are uncomfortable with the black, but that's why I used it. I wanted it to have a lot of impact.

I appreciate it!

Jumper I think you are getting really good results with your knife work. I am Liking all the colors you are using including the black. Black can really sharpen a painting up. I agree with some of the others that the larger black areas can be overpowering ...but there seems to be some texture in two of the black areas and that softens the 'in your face' effect that black usually has. Good stuff coming off your easel jumper

Just a thought jumper, but have you ever considered using your own mixes instead of the black? You can get some great darks from alizarin crimson and viridian and if you included these colours in your painting, you'd get great harmony too.

The point of harmony is a good one because using colors from your palette to make 'black' does IMHO usually make that color play nicer with the other colors.

Re: Traveler (knife #2)

Dave, thanks for your earlier comments about the knife work. I tried to soften the black with the small red dots. Plus it seemed to give the black areas a connection.

Hi Waggler, That's a great idea. I'm going to try that on my next work. I'm hoping I get a chance to paint today and my next one will have some darkness but it won't be solid black this time. I'm really glad you mentioned doing that. I'm thinking that it would work out really well.

And Dave again, I'm not sure if they will play nicer together, but it sure does seem to make sense. Red and black are my two favorite colors and combining them in some form seems like a real winner.

Thank you both for your thoughts.
