Gallery Show Question

I attended a gallery show recently, and noticed that most artists had one if not several sets of pastel society initials after their names; then I realized some of the societies listed didn't necessarily offer signature status, and several of the artists listed as 'PSA' were not signature members, including myself. I was a bit horrified, since I know I did not indicate signature status on my entrance application (I am a PSA member). My question is - Is it common (or even OK) for galleries to do this? It didn't seem kosher to me, but I figured I would ask here first.

Re: Gallery Show Question

It sounds like the gallery was merely listing which organizations they belonged to. Now, if the artists are actually signing PSA on their paintings and are not signature members, that is different and not acceptable.

Re: Gallery Show Question

Based on your comments it sounds like the association names were on the wall tags, not on after their actual signatures, like Karen indicated. I wouldn't worry about the gallery / show people adding your association membership information to your wall tags, though it might be better to have the tag say something like "PSA Associate Member" or "PSA Signature Member". Though not a pastel show, at the last OPA national show, every wall tag indicated the members status, Associate, Signature or Master.

Anyone signing as a signature or master member of a society when they are not one, is going to eventually get caught and might risk being expelled from the association for a period of time such as a year, which means they can't enter any shows. Plus it will make them look unethical to those buyers who understand signature status for memberships if/when they find out they aren't a signature member.
