Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

Finally! I've done one of the paintings I had been planning for this challenge
It's not based on the provided references It's based on a photo I took in February or March, I loved the reflections in the puddles, but I thought I'd change the scene and make it look like my daughter is playing side by side with a dragon

Beige pink pastel paper, A4 - Cray-Pas Specialist

Close-ups:

I plan to do one more for this month

Ha ha, this is so cute! Great job with the reflections, and I like your water ripples.

And a terrific green dragon!

Has a lovely feel Mira. The dragon looks like a friendly one. Very nice.

Thank you Jennie

I have replaced the snail with a leprechaun

This is just a A5 sketch. I chose this apple to finally use those garish greens

Mira - love the leprechaun with the apple sketch! The viridian green can be combined with purples, browns and yellow ochre to get some lovely shades of the darker greens.

Christel, thanks very much! what about the lighter greens? Yellow green and middle green are really garish in this set, could you recommend some colors for mixing and making the greens a little more natural?

Ha ha, cute idea, Mira! A good way to use some of your bright greens. I bet your daughter loves your last couple of paintings!

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

Light greens can be knocked back in different ways. I find the easiest way is to layer a thin layer or light orange or salmon pink(or beige or any pinkish light color) first and then add greens incrementally until the right shade is achieved. Adding lemon yellow or even medium yellow with white works well too. Yellow ochre with white is great for another hue.
Another option is to premix/melt your own colors by mixing appropriate amounts and melting them. I use a little turps for the hard op's.

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

Thanks Terri! haha, she is a little to small to appreciate them - she told me "it's not me in the picture" about the first one, and also "this dragon is bad"

Christel, thank you for the good advice! I'll try them all

Oh, dear. That sounds like a very decisive young lady who knows what she likes (wonder where she gets that from?)

Haha, Terri, this remark about my daughter is spot on!
She really is this way. Double assertiveness and decisiveness - from my hubby and myself
