It turned out so great, Christel! Ghostly - hmm, maybe just a tiny little bit... a lot of likeness and great job on the details

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

Quick draft - A5 sketch book. Very limited palette. Can't believe it took 60 minutes, but I did fuss about trying to create the blends I needed, rather than find a stick.

Really enjoyed the mental flips I was making.
Apologies for the rotated view.

Thanks Christel and Mira, looks better this morning than it did last night! I couldn't stop creating a hair fringe. And then I wanted to put the eyes in - they're almost there.

Still a WIP. Think I will need to 'spray' the snail, couldn't get any detail in today.

Still cheap oil pastels and limited palette, with a few touches of pastel pencil.

Ah, there's that apple! I love the way you've blocked this in, Jennie. Looking great.

Thanks Terri and Christel. I've really enjoyed this challenge. I have two more works on the go ... snakes and butterflies.

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

My biggest problem lately has been finding time to get some painting done. grrr...

I used the grid on this one, since I was pretty sure I'd have drawn the face either too large or small without some guidance. It's helping me a lot!

I only worked a little bit on the face with soft pastel pencils, just enough to give me confidence I could do it. The rest is blocked in with Nupastels.

Per Rich's excellent tutorial on using Nupastels for an underpainting, I sprayed all that with 2 passes of Krylon workable fix, before moving on with OP's.

I worked on the portrait part first. Thanks to Sarah for giving a recent list of good flesh colors - I used Neopastel cream as a first layer, with Senns orange ochre and a little flesh ochre.

Mungyos in the sky and the landscape part.

I *think* I'll call this one done, though I'm interested in feedback on my swirly bits. Lately, it seems if nothing is swirling, then I'm looking for a way to do it.

Re: Oil pastel challenge and chat for April 2019

Terri, great take on this reference!
Love your saturated colors - and the idea with the swirls connecting the girl and the tree is very cool I feel that something could be added... but as well it can be left as is. Too many details could spoil it... I was thinking about adding more swirls to add the flow thicker, but... not sure it would look good.
