Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

Thanks Maureen! I was thinking something didn't look quite right about it but couldn't put my finger on it.

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

I don't often work with pen and ink-mostly watercolor, in the traditional sense, but I needed some notecards for Autumn correspondence so I'm sketching and using P&I to highlight. These will become a part of a set of 10. Quickly sketched and painted with Schmenke and J.Richeson watercolors and ink with W&N drawing ink. Left: Cotton Boll and Autumn Leaves.

Beeblue - so sorry I missed these earlier - they're lovely notecards - should be a pleasure to receive them!

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

I've been fascinated with pen and ink for some time now and want to join in whenever I can. I find that sometimes when I'm doing a watercolor that I feel like it needs something more, so I tend to add to it by using my Pitt pen. But I've also done some with pen and ink a while back.

Lil, glad to see you here!
Nice, robust drawing of the boots!

Why not join the challenge too? .... it runs all month and when you submit a drawing you also get to suggest a theme for next month!

Thanks Maureen, I'll try to remember these challenges as they come up. We're now at the end of September, so I'll try and do the October challenge. See you next month.

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

Hey all, here are some of my first pen and ink drawings from when I started dabbling this past December. I received my first jar of speedball black India ink and a generic mixed brush set and decided I wanted to paint a raven. I did the juncos in the snow next. I had a lot of fun making them. The tree was a bic pen and prisma colored pencils. Recently I acquired some Uniball pens and 3 colored inks (ph martin's bombay) which I played around with on the hummingbird with an ink wash. The last one of the grosbeak was an ink wash and the derwent inktense pencils for color.

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

Yes indeed good stuff Amy, I like the tree best (probably because it has least colour in it).
Go on make that brave leap to the other side & do a pure black & white !
Try painting tone using textures ! even if you choose to add colour afterwards it'll be an adventure that will help with colour work anyway.
I can see that you are teetering on the edge & ready to try it out.
Do be careful though , it might cost you a whole sheet of paper
Great stuff, Mike

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

Thank you, John and Mike, for the encouraging words. I do love using color but those pure pen paintings I've seen others do look amazing. I think I'll enjoy attempting both versions.

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

Welcome Amy!
Some very nice pieces here - and so different!
The hummingbird piece is a lovely over-all design and very pretty ... the raven is dramatic and dynamic!
Nice pastoral scene - would have looked more impressive (my personal opinion!) without the coloured pencil and using the pen to describe texture and tone - as Mike suggests too.
Why not follow Mike's suggestion and give just the pen and the black ink free rein?
.... also - why not join us in the monthly challenge (see it near the top of the forum page) - spend as little (or as long) as you wish drawing from life?

Re: An Invitation to Beginners in Pen and Ink

Thanks, Maureen. I did see those challenges and I now have them on my list of things to do. I'll try them with just pen to start with and see how I do.
