Re: Self Portraits- join in the fun!

This is a great thread.

Here's mine from last year, painted from life using a mirror. I'm not really as grumpy as I look here but its difficult to smile at yourself while concentrating on painting.

There was a very good program in the UK a few months ago on self portraits, as well as showing a the greats like Durer (now there is a man that could paint) it suggested that using 2 mirrors gives a different view than the direct gaze. Has anybody tried it?

What great work in this thread! I posted this probably 2 years ago when I did it, but since you asked whether we had done one in the past I thought that it would be ok to re-post it. Its graphite on white paper. I've been thinking about doind another one soon.

here's one.
I am waiting for paint to dry on another. I am having more fun painting me with scarves on my head!! I am not sure I know who these people are (that I am painting in my mirror)

Re: Self Portraits- join in the fun!

Bethany, your half finished painting is very evocative. I am sorry for your loss.
Nancy, that blue is very powerful. Your painting seems authoritarian (perfect for our new admin guide) and very happy too
Sandra, you painted yourself nude? I hope it's warm where you are
Steve, how long did you hold that smile?
Peter, I like how yours turned out.
Old hobbiest, cool painting!
LaRubia, elegant as always in that trenchcoat!
John, interesting idea about the two mirrors. I had enough trouble getting one!
Lulu, we want to see the front of you!
Betty the cat, you MUST do a new one, you have grown a lot since you did that portrait!
Very moody and romantic Martin!

Re: Self Portraits- join in the fun!

Here's how to use your self portrait (not quite dry).... I am doing the opening speech for our portrait exhibition this morning!
So many people commented on the painting. I told them how interesting it was to be the subject- hoping they will sit for us this year.

Thank you Annemarie- I bow to your expertise- you have done more self-portraits than anyone I know!
John- that is the next method I am going to try- I bought 2 small mirrors at a charity shop this week in preparation. Yours looks great- I couldn't get past the serious face either!
Martin- So skillful with the black and white- I love the drama of this - and I see you have used it as your avatar.
Mimi- I love all the self-portraits you have done! (Watercolour- more respect!)
I know exactly what you mean about not knowing who they are! I had to treat the face in the mirror almost as a person I didn't know very well!
(I think you mean Jeanne for the half-finished portrait )

Re: Self Portraits- join in the fun!

Okay, let me join the party as well, since it sure fun. Attached drawing was made by me using one mirror. I see a certain resemblance, probably because I look daily in the mirror. My wife sees this less. Hence the issue of using one or two mirrors John. I know a guy who indeed painted selfportraits using two mirrors for this very reason. I personally find it difficult enough using only one.

Oh Bethany, thanks. Yes, it was Jeanne's half portrait. You on the other hand have done a wonderful painting and good luck to you on your exhibit!

Re: Self Portraits- join in the fun!

I needed a break from dong masters' copies, and I finally decided to paint a quick and dirty SP in transparent red oxide, but it looks like it was way too quick and doesn't look like me!

And it was from a mirror...

I got my nose too short, for one thing, so I'm going to consider it a WIP. It will dry quickly since I used Liquin. I may get it done today at some point. I'm calling it "Old Lady Riding Hood."

I can't tell your nose is short! it's a nice study.
red oxide is a great color of paint to use.

Re: Self Portraits- join in the fun!

Thanks, Mimi, or should I say Patron St. Mimi, from your two nice SPs?

Heavens, I've really missed seeing a lot of portraits on this thread!

Sandra
, this is so nice. I love the way you do eyes, and this is beautiful!

Jeanne
, there's a lot of emotion in this drawing, and thank you for sharing its meaning for you.

Steve
, such a sunny expression; you're right not to let the women hog this thread!

Peter, yours is great! And now I know how hard a mirror painting is to do!

Leigh
, it's nice to see your Avatar full-size. It is so well-done!

Annemarie, your SPs are to die for they are so good, and I love the "woman of mystery" air in this one!

Becca
, this has been one of favorites of yours for a long time!

Old Hobbyist
, this is a very artistic effect. It's not easy being green!

Lulu, don't be scared, just go ahead and paint from life - if I'm not too chicken to do it, you shouldn't be either! But it is a nice hair portrait!

John, good work, and keep painting!

Martin, this is a very sensitively done portrait. Pencil can let us get a broad range of values.

Hans, nice drawing!

And of course Bethany, you've really started something wonderful here. Your portrait is so terrific (I love watching you paint!), and thank you for inviting us all to post our SPs here on your thread!
