Cock a Doodle Doo

Hi all, I did a written tutorial for this one. I know some people struggle wit getting vibrant colors on black paper so I thought I would share how I do it. This is 7x9 on smooth black matboard done with prismacolor pencils and titanium white mixture from Brush and Pencil. Ref. is from Pixabay. Also sharing the link to the tutorial, Enjoy.

Fantastic work! It feels like a portrait of a rather arrogant nobleman! Very striking use of the three main colours.

Re: Cock a Doodle Doo

I always wondered how to handle black paper, great tutorial. I'd have to say you definately improved over the reference photo, bringing the subject out so that the features are much more visible in your finished piece. Love you work, have for years. Was really surprised the Prismacolor white showed up so well on that black paper.

Re: Cock a Doodle Doo

Thanks Karen, yes you have always been a grand supporter of mine. I love the term you quoted and never forgot it, the Queen of Pop...lol. I always think of that when I do a piece and try to make it "pop". The black matboard is really nice to work on, I don't know how other black papers compare. The prismacolor is pretty opaque on it but the clincher is the titanium white mixture that I used. It really fills in the gaps of where the white pencil failed. I would not be able to achieve the brightness with out it.

Re: Cock a Doodle Doo

I still think of you as Queen of Pop, I just don't say it much anymore because I thought I wore it out Lol, you will always be Queen of Pop in the WC Colored Pencil Forum, I still remember the tips you gave me over the years too. Like the fact that you're still using Prismacolors because I still use those too.. can't get away from them even though I bought others.

Would Love To Know what colors you put in the eyeball, if you recall Because it's such a natural and realistic brown eye for a chicken... so real .

Amazing what you managed to squeeze into on such a tiny paper, too.

Re: Cock a Doodle Doo

Thanks Karen. I love it. I really can't remember all the colors at this point, I know I started with white for the base, added some yellow tone, then I think I used light umber, some scarlet lake, tuncson red along the rim of the eye. I may have used a few other colors as I progressed just to get more depth. I hope that helps.

Re: Cock a Doodle Doo

I followed your tutorial step by step on Carrie's website with great interest Peggy. Thank you for showing how you did such a fabulous use of colour, and on a black support, which is not the easiest!
