Graphics apps for Android Tablet

Hi, I'm posting this question for a friend, as I'm unable to answer her question about Android Tablets. Are there any good drawing/painting apps available, something with similar capabilities as Artrage or Gimp.

I'm preparing to teach an Art Rage class at a local art gallery. (I'm using Artrage Studio Pro on a MacBook Pro) This woman has been interested in taking the class, but now she tells me she is considering buying a Galaxy tablet. Artrage is not made for tablets other than Ipad, so I explained it would not do her any good to take my class, and that I strongly suggest she investigate apps before purchasing the tablet. I know Ipad has several excellent drawing apps, but everything I see online in Android apps sounds like children's coloring apps.

Any input from anyone familiar with Android Tablets?

Re: Graphics apps for Android Tablet

Elaine,

I don't have an Android tablet, however, you might want to start here:

http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/android-apps-designer/

There are additional links to 'Shortcuts', one being Drawing tools. Further drill down into the apps themselves will present more details on the app itself from the Android Apps website as well as user reviews of the apps by actual users.

Hope this helps.

Re: Graphics apps for Android Tablet

I use primarily Sketchbook Pro ($4.99 on Google Play), LayerPaint ($2.99), and Photoshop Touch (came with my tablet, normally $9.99) on my 10-inch android tablet (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1). They all recognize/use the Wacom pressure-sensitive stylus of the Note 10.1 and support layers (# depends on the resolution of the image created, I tend to work with a max of 4 and merge as I finalize changes). Sketchbook Pro has the best brushes and UI, whereas LayerPaint allows you to do color blending/mixing a la Painter/Paint Tool SAI.

You can get a free version of Sketchbook (Sketchbook Mobile) to try it out first, the Pro version just adds more features that IMO make it worth it.

Sample (unfinished) using entirely Sketchbook Pro attached (sketch of Flaming June figure by Leighton I did while looking at art books at the local public library )

With regards to similarity to Artrage (which I also own, graphics programs are like candy to me), the UI is significantly different.

Update: I checked Artrage forums and the company has stated it's working on an android app (last update September of last year, so no news yet on release)

It looks like something similar called InfinitePainter is now on Google Play that people have said feels/looks similar to Artrage - play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brakefield.painterfull&hl=en

I have not tried it and YMMV (though I'll probably buy it since the reviews are good and now I'm curious)
