Jumping Off Point - finished in 4 colors

I started this piece in honor of my Aunt Emiko who died in 2009. I cut the four blocks, but could not register the colors when printing with my current equipment. I discovered the outer reaches of my little letterpress, and decided I would wait till my big press was restored.
More than a year later, with a restored press, and an upcoming show, I finished a small first edition of 7 prints.
I am very pleased with the result, and eager to start another multi-block print. I may even add a second color to one of the images I am working on right now.

I still don't have a very good method for registering the images on the block before I make the cuts. I'm sure there is an easy way, but I have not yet found it. For these blocks I used carbon paper. As you can see, it was less than perfect.

This is such a strong image, Justin, that the registration doesn't even bother me! and the slip is very minor. What a great way to get back to printing! I'm assuming this is wood block......

Justin, it's a beautiful image, and I too am not bothered by the slight mis-registration. I know it bothers you a bit because it's not "perfect". But I'm sure your Aunt Emiko (great name!) was not perfect either, and would love this print's imperfection
Registration is a bear for sure. I'm getting ready to start on a new reduction cut, and I hope to do better with it on my own registration than I did on my last. We'll see.
I love the movement/curves of the ladder and the legs and feet!

Wow. Great print. Interesting subject matter. Great colors.... the off registration does not bother me one bit. Great print!

This is a beautiful print, Justin... one of those prints where the printmaker viewer sees beyond the technique and looks at it as a whole. The registration flaws (where ever they exist here) are part of the character of the print. It speaks a great message of something 'beyond' us... and of hope.

Regarding registration, I have found making copies and pasting them down on the blocks help a great deal in getting the cut lines sorted out. The paper and paste (any cheap stuff) comes off easily with water. I find carbon paper is iffy when working multiple blocks mainly because I can never seem to draw a line the same each time.

Re: Jumping Off Point - finished in 4 colors

great image Justin
had to look for the areas of registration that you are concerned about
if you hadn't said anything probably wouldn't have noticed as overall the image has a strong impact and my eye isn't hunting for mistakes in it
thanks Diane for the tip about gluing copies down onto block surfaces to use as a guide. I too have some issues with carbon paper as never can seem to get things in exact alignment.

It's beautiful, and I really like the slight mis-registration! The brown shivering ever-so-slightly away from the black makes it seem as if the ladder is moving, quivering like a diving-board after the leap.

Re: Jumping Off Point - finished in 4 colors

Thank you all for your encouragement.

I am pleased visually by the piece. I am not so much bothered that the registration on this piece doesn't line up. More so, I am bothered that I tried to have tight registration and it didn't work.

Visual success. Process failure.

If I spend this much effort on future pieces, I do not want to have mis-registration problems. I'm sure you all understand.

Justin, yes, I do understand. I felt the same about my sunflowers print. I liked it in spite of the mis-regristration, (though some of the prints I pulled were way off), but I want to be able to have more control the next time.
