Pieces in Pink; casein tempera on Claybord panel; 10″ x 8″
The eucalyptus leaves required a lot of back and forth – painting the leaves and then painting the background. I like how they eventually turned out – however it was a challenge to make them appear realistic but not overworked.
C & C welcome!
February 21, 2018 at 6:11 am #569533Another beautiful painting, Mary. Having had an eucalyptus tree for several years, I can say the leaves are spot on – a viewer knows exactly what it is and it isn’t overworked,

March 23, 2018 at 7:18 pm #569531Mary, I do so love your work, really an inspiration to me to grab more Casein. I really should have a bigger collection of them considering how much I like the paint. So limited when working with just ultramarine blue, burnt umber, and white right now. All good, picking up 5 tubes in my next order to round out all the colors I need for my usual palette.
Out of curiosity, does buffing the painting when it is fully cured help darken darks? I tend to just pain over in other media because I do not have any black or other really dark Casein colors.

Buffing does intensify the darks – and therefore brings out the lights and colors too. It’s more subtle than varnishing, I believe – but definitely noticeable. I’ll attach photos here of buffed and un-buffed paintings for you to see the difference – both in glancing views and more-or-less head-on views.
March 27, 2018 at 12:42 am #569534Very nice work Mary!
Speaking for myself, I can’t really get casein to work without black. But I’m fine with that. I also like spraying the finished picture with casein fixative, which seems to darken the darks very mildly, and also strengthen the surface against scratches and such while it cures.
March 27, 2018 at 9:01 am #569532Thanks so much for sharing Mary, yes I am loving my Casein for mixed media purposes, often using a bit of the white like people would use white gouache. Also makes an fantastic underpainting medium, but I do intend to use it for some finished paintings when I have more than 3 colors. My List has 5 colors that I use for painting everything that I am going to buy in my next online order.
