Dave--this is so helpful--just have done a bit in pen and ink with w/c wash and love the combo--this is really great material for the summer--I am delighted to have found it. Many many thanks.

Re: Basic 101: Class 29 - Pen & Ink drawing

Hi, I attempted these sketches (with pen and ink) of trees using a fine felt tipped pen I already had. This was certainly a different technique to the other lessons. Doing it in my sketch pad it bled through onto the back though. Perhaps if I purchased the rapidograph pen as was suggested these efforts would look better?
Cheers, Lyn

Lyn - Looks very good . Only one remark: with pencils there is a general tendency to stay too light. With P&I it is the opposite, it is difficult to keep nice mid tones. Pens with a finer tip will help.

All kinds of pens work very well in this class, even old-fashioned dip pens, or ball pens.
Stippling (next class) is very difficult / tiring without the technical pens. But unless you intend to draw regularly with P&I, I'd advice against purchasing the expensive technical pens. When unused for some time they will clog, even when reasonably thoroughly cleaned .

Re: Basic 101: Class 29 - Pen & Ink drawing

These bushes aren't grounded because my two oldest granddaughters (ages 4 and 6) watched me working on it and asked me to draw the Powerpuff Girls flying around the bushes, lol. The cartoons wouldn't go with this class, so I'll add them for the grandkiddies after posting.

I found page one of a tutorial here:
http://www.wetcanvas.com/Articles2/3698/194/
but I can't locate the rest of the pages. (?)

I'm not sure if the link above is working, but it's

"Pen & Ink - Shading/Techniques/Lesson"

Re: Basic 101: Class 29 - Pen & Ink drawing

Very well done, monarch .
The articles "Area" is a part of WetCanvas that is derailed since many years .
I cannot even access that first page. A trick that seems to work sometimes is described in this post.
Hope it helps

Thank you, arnoud, for the help with the tutorial. Sadly, I wasn't able to access it. It's really a loss to have those tutorials derailed.

Here's another exercise for this class. More to come as soon as time allows.

I've never really known how to draw trees before, so this has been a great lesson!
