Three Still Lifes

These are some of the still lifes I've done in the last month. They are all done in Mungyos and Neopastels on black paper or matboard.

Pears and Bananas 7x11 inches on Mi-Tientes
I didn't use any black pastel on this one (usually do). I like how the fruit came out but don't like the diagonal strokes of the background.

Peaches in a Bowl 10x10 inches on matboard
I'm really pleased with this one although I think the peaches kind of look like apples. I liked working on the matboard.

Apricots 7x9 inches on Mi-Tientes
I'm not sure about this one. I think its confusing to look at with all the drapery and the reflection of the apricots on the fabric on the left.

C & C is welcome

Beautiful work, Maria. You have an interesting technique of applying the op's.

Re: Three Still Lifes

Well, I think these are all very successful, Maria. I really like how you paint with OP's, I like your diagonal strokes.

You mentioned using Mi Teintes up there - are they tinted? There is a very strong feel of underpainting or back-color here. It looks terrific!

I don't think your apricots are too busy at all - great job with the draping, and I like how you've handled light. I agree the reflection bit might be a bit bright, but if you hadn't mentioned it I don't know if I would have noticed - it's not overwhelming.

Lovely work!

Thanks very much for your comments.

Terricks - yes, these are all done on black. I really like working on black. When I use white paper or even a medium shade it just ends up looking flat.

Re: Three Still Lifes

I like your still life paintings, Maria. The lighting is really beautiful. I like the forshortened bananas in the first one and the way you did the dish in the second one.
And the apricots are my favorite.

I've only used black paper once, and my result certainly wasn't this good. But you make make me want to give it another look. Thanks!

Re: Three Still Lifes

I also love working on black paper. It makes the entire image pop.
My favorite is a Daler Rowny black notebook that has pages 180g/m^2 and a medium tooth. That is my favorite support for oil pastels and best paper I've used, and it allows many many layers.
