It always takes me about an hour to get to our figure group. hundreds of cars are trying to get out of the university while I’m trying to get in. Last night traffic was a bit lighter and I even managed to find the right room first time (demand for rooms is high and the organisers have to swap around a lot) I was looking forward to a new model but it turned out to be the same as the last session. His poses were similar but he didnt once leave the chair. he leant forward, he leant back and nearly always had his hand stuck in the air which looked very similar to someone throwing two fingers to the crowd My creative juices slowly drained away and it felt like I’d screwed on a different hand. Ripping up the worst was very theraputic. I know we’ve all been there and will be many times again, I just wanted to share my pain

The therapeutic value of ripping up a bad drawing cannot be overstated. I have to say the fragments here don’t look so bad to me. I think you have higher standards than I do.
In the words of Mr. Schwarzenegger, You’ll be back…..C&C always welcome.

I’ve only shown the half decent bits K, and yes he did – and he said ‘yeah man’ a lot when I chatted to him A little pretentious but he seems a nice fella, he just needs advice on poses.

FWIW, when I’ve done work I really dislike, I either correct it (that’s good practice and memory exercise) or go back into it with colour, like hi flow acrylic or oil pastel, and just have fun with it; since I’m going to throw it out anyway, all rules are off That helps loosen me up.
Cheers,
ChrisC&C of all sorts always welcome! (I don't mind rude or harsh criticism.)
I suppose I have to do this too (my blog, & current work). My Visual Arts Nova Scotia page.

The primary palette: Attention, observation, memory, imagination, integration, executionOctober 20, 2018 at 5:14 am #712878That’s a really sad story David, all that effort to get there and not much to show for it…but you know where will be days days where you are a winner!
I’ve had my fair share of uninspiring models…too many like that and the group won’t survive… and then there are the fantastic models that leave you with no excuse for drawings that just don’t do them justice!
The drawings that did survive the annihilation suggest that is was worthwhile!

We want models to give us problems we can solve not be the problem. The positive is you are still engaging the life model. Journeyman would have agreed with your actions.

I have not ventured into figure drawing/painting. Perhaps I should take the plunge. I tend to stick to landscape However, there’s no beating the satisfying rip up of a failed effort in whatever style! Then you can tape down that pristine sheet of new paper and proceed to ruin another one!
Being somewhat disabled, it is difficult for me to get to life classes so I shall dip into your figure forum now and then and try to learn something. Whilst my building surveying background enables me to draw buildings and cope with perspective, the human form is quite another matter. One of the things I have noticed as a Guide myself on Watercolour Forum is how reluctant people are to offer constructive criticism. I wish they would rather than just say “good job”. So I wish you well in encouraging a dialogue with your contributors.

October 22, 2018 at 3:18 pm #712891Thank you for your welcome Mike, There are a number of us in here who do give sensible criticism to each other. I have certainly benefited from advice and hopefully have provided some. As to a venture into figure work I often work from photographs when my group isn’t operating so you have no excuse 😉
