    Hi everyone,

Just sharing a start to a new scratchboard piece. Since cattle are part of my family history – pretty much as far back as I can follow on some sides – I can’t help but have a fondness for them. So I’m working on a new piece using my own reference photo of one of our steers. I wanted a dramatic crop of this animal, so that it’s all about the eyes…and a bit of the ears. The scratchboard is 6×12 inches in size. So far, I’m using a #11 X-Acto Blade. I expect that will be my only tool for this piece. I’m just getting started, so I hope you’ll join me in this WIP. Since I work pretty slow, I’ve brought coffee and donuts. :wink2:

I already have a scratchboard of a steer entitled “Steer”…I’m horrible at titling my work. Any name ideas would be appreciated. C&C welcome. Thank you for looking!

Thanks Kay. Glad to have you here for the WIP. :)

            That’s great, Richard! It’s a buffet – help yourself. ;)

Wish you hadn’t mentioned donuts. None left here, may have to go to town…ha.

I’ve gotten a little more done on this piece. The cowlick in the center makes the fur direction an interesting challenge. Funny how cattle always have that cowlick there (I guess that’s where the term came from after all! ). Once in a while, you’ll see a calf/cow with a pair of cowlicks side by side…like a couple of little stars of fur.

Anyway, here’s where this is at the moment. C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

I’m sure it will be wonderful. Of all media I have used, scratch board was a disaster for me. I give you Much respect!!

Thank you so much, Skylar. It is a different medium…it has its challenges for sure, but that’s true of any medium. I can’t imagine doing such great digital art as you do. I respect you right back. :) My disaster medium? Watercolors. Yikes, I was so bad at watercolors!

I’ve got a new update…and fresh coffee and donuts to share!

Not a lot to say about him at the moment…more hairs are coming in, and the white spot on his forehead is all in place (and will be brightened up more later). The eye is just started. I love how cattle have such enormously long eyelashes. They have pretty eyes. It’s coming along. :)

            C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

Here’s an update at last. I’ve been working around the eye area, which is always delicate and precise, so it goes slower. The eye is still just a hollow spot and needs those lovely long lashes that cattle have. Otherwise, moving along the brow/temple area. It’s coming along.

Fresh coffee and donuts, anyone? :cat:
