Peter Janetta MD, was one of the greatest neurosurgeons of his time based on the innovative surgical brain procedure he developed to eliminate facial spasms and the facial pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia or Tic doloroso.
That procedure known as microvascular decompression guided the field of brain neurosurgery for decades with various applications, resulting in major awards for his work. While completing his neurosurgical residency at UCLA in 1966, he treated a patient for facial spasms with novel surgery through the base of the brain to move a blood vessel pressing against the facial or trigeminal nerve, thus halting the spasms and pain that can affect facial muscles, the eyes and ears.
I met Dr. Janetta personally in 1994 in Pittsburg, for I suffered that terrible pain for at least four years. He did that procedure in December 1994. The facial pain disappeared as a miracle. Unfortunately he died in 2016 after a fall.
This work was done on an Arches watercolor paper, 15X21, using charcoal pencil and white chalk. It is almost finished except for minor issues in the background and jacket. Thank you for looking.
January 19, 2018 at 8:28 am #548153Here I was expecting to see a drawing of my brother. He’s now the head of micro thoracic surgery at a Harvard hospital but he was a neurosurgeon for a long time. Sigh.
However, in spite of that, this is nicely done as all your tribute images are. He looks like a kind man … instead of someone who likes to play with knives and sharp pointy things.
January 19, 2018 at 9:42 am #548156I did not know there was a micro-thoracic surgery department in Harvard. Unless is mini-invasive thoracic surgery. Well, a lot of credit to your brother for being also a neurosurgeon before. He must be the “brain” of the family?
I remember very well when I was waking up after the surgery Dr Janetta asked me ” Is the pain gone?” Of course, it disappeared.January 19, 2018 at 11:12 am #548154He started out in neurosurgery but liked having more of his patients recover to see improvements so he changed to thoracic surgery. His hospital, Beth Israel, is a teaching hospital in Boston that must be run by Harvard – his work email is at harvard.edu. I said the department incorrectly .. his email reads Director, Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery. Oops.
There are 3 of us brothers and the smartest one is probably David who is deaf and autistic. I can usually out-think Michael the doctor and never tire of reminding him of his limitations. (I’m really proud of him but don’t let him know I said that).

January 20, 2018 at 7:17 pm #548169Great portrait!
Years ago, I read the book Working in a Very Small Place: The Making of a Neurosurgeon by Mark Shelton, which is about Janetta and his treatment for trigeminal neuralgia among other things. Then about 3 years ago, my mother developed the condition. Hers is controlled with meds right now so she has not looked into surgery. I still have the book and read it again after her diagnosis.

February 18, 2018 at 9:50 am #548155Good afternoon, Moises!
Greetings from Austria!
I just had to look up your Portrait because of “Neurosurgeon”
I have been working on the Neurosurgical ICU at the General Hospital in Vienna (Nurse) since 1994. There is not a month that goes by without a “Janetta” that stays with us for observance over night- the legacy is living on, if you may say…(and the pain relieve is amazing- so the patients)you did a wonderful Portrait!
Thank you- I never looked up, how the inventor of this procedures looked like.
Greetings again!
