My friend Pat is a luthier and he’s currently making a couple of baroque guitars for a show in April. In this painting, he’s making what’s called a rose that goes under the sound hole. It’s made from paper (he uses Arches 140# cold press) and is very intricate. They contain many layers that are stacked and look like an upside down wedding cake. I included a copy of a pic of a soundboard that has a rose in it. Unfortunately, the picture doesn’t do the rose justice, but it should give you and idea.
Done on Arches 140# hot press, 9″x12″ from a block using W&N paints.
C&C welcome. Thanks for looking.

As long as there is light, I will paint it.

February 24, 2018 at 7:27 pm #572172Clever stuff Art – both what he is doing and your watercolour. I like the way his glasses are just about hanging on and also the darks which emphasise those hands at work. A study in concentration with some lovely light illuminating his face and grey whiskers.
Well painted
