Watch The Skies ~ XP in Colored Pencil

As Steven Spielberg's film Close Encounters of the Third Kind celebrates its 40th anniversary, I thought this tied in nicely with a paper sculpture I recently completed and wanted to share.

I don't usually do landscapes in paper sculpture but I've been compelled for some time to do a 3 dimensional image of Devils Tower in Wyoming, viewed at night. After rejecting several approaches, I decided to go full color with the help of Prismacolor pencils. The shooting star is my nod to the movie.

Watch The Skies
Specifications: 22" X 10" mixed media paper sculpture
Reference photo: Public Domain

I posted a WIP thread in the Colored Pencil forum showing the construction of this sculpture:

Thanks for looking!

Very nice and unusual, though I am not at all sure what "paper sculpture" implies.

Re: Watch The Skies ~ XP in Colored Pencil

Not the best example of my work as the photograph really doesn't show the depth of the sculpture. Most of my subjects are birds and animals. I create a foundation or armature of the subject with card stock and foam core. The armature usually has a depth of about an inch. To the armature I glue paper "fur" or "feathers" or other textures to create a skin. The sculptures can be either illustrative in nature or photorealistic.

Hope that explains my approach.

Rob

Love the blues very deep and dark, a touch mysterious also...perfect.
I looked on the other post and I see the work on the tower, my question is are the trees all paper cutouts also?

This is really beautifully done! I love that shooting star, it adds a sense of animation to the piece....and as Scotty said in THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD...."Everybody...wherever you are...watch the skies...keep watching the skies!"

So cool!

We're going to go out there again sometime soon. I really like that area and you did it justice.

Re: Watch The Skies ~ XP in Colored Pencil

Thank you so much everyone

Diane ~ Yep, each tree was individually colored, cut and glued in place. The support is tiered so that the trees have a bit of space between them, but that's pretty much lost in the photo.

WoodyWelch ~ while the title is lifted from a line of dialog from CE3K, the quote from The Thing was very much in mind.

I recently rewatched Close Encounters on the big screen, the first time since 1990, and was completely moved by its visual splendor. Would certainly love seeing Devils Tower for myself one day.

Thank you again!

Rob
