Winter Canyon

8"x6" (about 20x15 cm) on a panel

I went back to my favored palette of ultramarine, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, and titanium white. I used M Graham's fast dry titanium white and walnut alkyd medium, which helped the paint dry quickly for layering brushstrokes and detail accents.

In the original photo there's a small train coming into the scene on some tracks but I left it out.

Here's a closeup of the water to see how the brushstrokes work. The lower right corner of the painting is where I actually started.

Boy, this is really GOOD! Shows what can be done with a limited palette. Beautiful painting.

Re: Winter Canyon

Stunning work! I can't get over the fact that you did all this in only a little 8" x 6" painting.

Re: Winter Canyon

A good example of "cool" color opposed to "warm" color!

Re: Winter Canyon

You've captured the light very well. Beautiful texture in such a realistic painting. Very nicely done.

Re: Winter Canyon

I really like this. Wonderful brushwork, esp. in the water. Love your shadow coming down the front and crossing over the water, makes for interesting shapes. I like that your trees in the far left are less detailed, which makes them recede. Also like your color and temperature range in the painting, esp. considering such a limited palette. Bravo!

That was my favorite part to paint, because of how the little dabs of paint can have lots of overlapping variations.
