Hello, total newbie to acrylics here since I paint exclusively with watercolors but I have some old denim jackets and white canvas shoes that I really want to customize. And I can’t do that with watercolor  My question is do I need to apply gesso? And since I’m going to be using textile medium with the paints, should I also add the medium to the gesso?

        Cheers!:)

Also, I’m concerned with heat setting as I’ve read it releases formaldehyde. Will the medium still do it’s job (prevent cracking, improve washability etc.) when I skip heat setting?

            Cheers!:)

You can use Golden GAC 900 added to the acrylic paint. After you paint it & it dries, you heat set it by tossing it into the dryer.
Heres a link to the golden site with a video on it.

I have painted many fabric items to sell. I use LIQUITEX jar. NO medium needed. I do heat seat with an iron. I put a brown paper bag over the painting and press. When done it is wachine wash and dry
