WIP C&C Requested

ell this one has been a bit of a bear. Many things I am not happy with....but I am trying not to give up. I am going to go back in and add some brighter colors to lighten it up in places.....I also dont like the lines, they are distracting and harsh I think. I am going to go in an remove them I think.

Re: WIP C&C Requested

Hi Spotters, I believe that you have come up with your own solution! I think that your ideas of what to do with this piece would be everything I would say in a critique. If you could make the colors blend at the point where the lines are, I think it would be better. And it's just me (I'm a color freak remember) but I think the darkest part of the piece may benefit from lighter colors. A light green comes to mind.

Like I said, I think you already know what to do and I have no further suggestions. It's really a nice piece. Be careful with your update

nice work

I like it that you have brightened the colors, but about the lines, I think that the first one in which they were less observable, was better. Just my opinion though.
Thanks for sharing

Hi, This one would give me a headache It's very busy and you mentioned you didn't like the lines in the first piece but you have actually made them darker in the second, also I don't think the colours are working together all that well..I think you need to take out the dark lines and re think the colour mix in this one..hope that helps a bit.

This is a very brave piece! I agree with Katie on the colours. You have a lot of colours literally vibrating together and my eye doesn't know where to go. It might be that the dark lines create barriers to my eye as well... not too sure. I know abstract art is different than more representative styles but I think its Still not a bad idea to lead the viewer even if its in an abstract piece. The flowing sections do help a bit with this but the colour creates too much discord. I hope this helps a bit, and keep up the good hard work!

Weighing in from the other side....

Hello Spotters~~

I'm posting because I see this painting a bit differently than the others--I do not wish to be contrarian. I want only to show support for the plusses.

The size is a very manageable 18 x 20 - I imagine it hanging on a wall. It would certainly cheer up a room and because it is so interesting to me I don't consider it to be too busy. I like that my eye keeps wandering all over it.

Jumper has a very good idea regarding adding some light green to the dark area, perhaps in the upper left, to be a counterbalance to the happy blob on the lower right.

As for those lines.....I like them very much in the second version--again imagining that I am viewing this on a wall, not on a computer screen right in front of my face. The second version reminds me of a stained glass window--I adore stained glass windows with their rich colors, so this painting makes me very happy.

Because I enjoy both versions of the painting, I urge you to paint more than one at least (why I noted the manageable size). I think that it is a winner worthy of several fully-finished sister paintings. Friends will love it, buyers will want to have it. Courage!

Lana

Re: WIP C&C Requested

I agree with Lana as it does resemble a stained glass window. I also agree with some others as it's quite busy and hard to look at. However, I'm sure it looks better in person and brighter.

Taking pics of art has been such a challenge for me. To get the most accurate look I dial down the negative exposure on my digital. Once I have the pic on my computer, if it still isn't bright enough as the real thing, I'll sometimes use the "White Balance" function in Gimp. Another idea is to play around with brightness and exposure in whatever photoshop you are using. Since I only have an outdated digital (from 2010, Nikon Coolpix s560) achieving the most accurate photo is hard. Then again, I don't know much about pics so this is the best I can manage, haha. Hopefully this will help some.

Regards,
Cory

Re: WIP C&C Requested

Hi Spotters. For me, when a painting is so busy all over, it becomes chaotic. There's no place for my eyes to rest, so I'm constantly flicking all over the picture plane and i find it hard to look at. This spoils the enjoyment because being looked at is what a painting's for. l find they need a combination of busy and quieter areas. Also, there's little variation in the shape, big small etc.. This is something else, in my opinion, that a painting needs. Especially abstract painting.
I'm hoping you understand this as a critique and not criticism.

Re: WIP C&C Requested

I prefer the first version because the lines between the similar color fields are suggested rather than accentuated. Also try flipping it 90 degrees to the right. And do another and another til you have pushed it as far as you care to go and see what happens. All my work these days tends to be intuitive.
