Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Van Gogh) June/July, 2008

I m in a sort of Van Gogh fever !!

here's the second one -- again mine is "calmer" than the original

I chose this one not because it is one of may favourite van Goghs, but because I wanted the challenge with all those details
I suppose that' s why I' m going to do the Zouave as well....

P.S. the pronounciation of the G s is something like a cough or the noise you do when clearing your throat from for instance a hair deep in it, but it is definitely no F

well, the two churches of Auvers. Want to guess which one is van Gogh's ?

Well, I am certainly embarassed and corrected. Sorry everyone. I was apparently passing on incorrect info given to me by an art instructor. I guess no matter where you get info you should always double check the source. sigh.

Thank you Friesin for the correction. I do appreciate it.

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Van Gogh) June/July, 2008

I just wanted to say...I am very glad friesin corrected my statement regarding the pronunciation of Van Gogh's name...which I had obviously been misinformed about.

I would hate to be passing on incorrect information, and am so glad this was set right! Thank You friesin.

Personally, I think because part of MAPS is to learn Art History about the masters, things like correct pronouncing of names is just as important as brush stroke. I love what I am learning about the masters, art history, and yes...the correct pronunciation of names. This has got to be the absolute best way to learn Art History anyone has ever come up with!!

I am home now from vacation...and seeing all the gorgeous pieces already being worked on, I can't wait to get started on my Irises.

Hi EP, I'm glad to hear that you'll be joining us. Thank you! No I don't think I'll add the signature. I like your VG selection "Road with Cypress and Star"... looks fun and challenging.

Hi Cyndi, Thank you so much for sharing the photos and your experience at the museum! The close-up is fantastic! You can see the way he layed on the painting thickly. Looking forward to seeing your Irises!

Hi Elizabeth, Thank you for your kind words!

Hi Steve, Your VG is coming along great! Thank you sharing your palette!

Hi Susan, Thank you! I'm not much for painting flowers live or dead. But these were not that bad... kinda semi-dead. I can relate to that one... looks like my garden.

Hi friesin, I love your interpretation of the olive trees. Great brushwork and I love, love, love the colors you selected. VG fever.... that's great! I really like your painting of the church of Auvers... your interpertation is softer... I like it.

Hi Angie, Thanks for dropping by... I hope you're able to join us. Remember it's all about having fun and learning a little along the way.

Hi Colleen, Plenty of time... good luck with the cleaning. I started my spring cleaning... didn't get too far. oops

Here' a quote I found in one of my art books:

"Copying is a legitimate activity, not for the purpose of imitation, but as a means of learning - learning to see as other artists see - learning about their styles and techniques - as well as stimulating the imagination by experiencing the expression and spirituality in the work of other artists.

A further purpose of copying is to acquire an understanding of how an artist performed a technique to achieve certain results, rather than to produce a duplicate of the results. "

This was taken from A Guide to Drawing by Mendelowitz-Faber-Wakeham which is a Fine Arts University textbook.

This is so cool! I love, love, love his Starry Night Over the Rhone, and Public Garden with Couple and Blue Fir Tree. I will be attempting the latter. I could look at that Fir Tree for a good long time. A challenge for me to paint.

Cyndi - that is gorgeous and I'm so happy the guard let you take the photos.
Elizabeth - thanks for your support
Steve - love the jacket
Susan - I've got my passport and my toothbrush - when do we leave? LOL
friesin - great tree trunks in your first piece and wonderful job on the church painting!!! Wow!!
Angie - hope to see one from you
Janet - thank you
Jim - holy cow - great job with the yellows and blues. Your version looks more interesting to me than the original

Well, I've started. It's in an ugly stage right now (probably one of many to come). Here's a photo from earlier today:

I worked on the nude, since some thought she was too pink...I hope I was able to keep her looking ok. For some reason, I really want this to be right.

C&C is welcome!

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Van Gogh) June/July, 2008

EP - Thanx for the words. The pic was taken at the Bangkok airport.

Steve - You're onto a great rendition. The biggest problem I have with later VG self-portraits is the "picky-picky-picky" way that he layed in the brush strokes. This is very hard to duplicate unless you have epilepsy or palsy or are simply mad at the canvas or the thing that you're trying to paint. That's why I decided on an earlier S-P. He was less weird then.

Jim
