Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Thank you Susan, Peter, Alison, Lilian, Dejaa and Elizabeth!

Peter, the sketch looks great! Looking forward to your next update. I know what you mean by I feel the same way. I got lost once and started painting the sleeve of the girl thinking it was part of the figure that I was working on. It's like a maze.

Alison, looking forward to seeing your Umbrellas.

Dejaa, your painting is looking wonderftul! Thank you sooo much for sharing the Renoir Palette... very useful information.

Elizabeth, I currently have a desktop computer that can't be moved but I have been thinking of purchasing a laptop. I might go out and buy one today. Great start on your painting! Thank you for sharing how you rough in your values.

I found a site that some of you may be interested in. I devoted solely to Renoir: http://www.renoir.org.yu/

Here's the first burst. I went at it in a dryish brush sort of way, but a bit too tentatively. I think. But getting a feel for it.

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Janet, thank you for the link to Renior.org. I found the painting I'm attempting there and it is so much more detailed. I've got it bookmarked. By the way, I was thinking what a great education MAPS will be for me. I took music appreciation but not art so much of this is new. Thanks again!

Peter, your strokes look very Renior-like. I think you'll do exceptional well with this style.

Elizabeth

Peter, your sketch looks fantastic, I can't wait to see the painting if the sketch is anything to judge it by!

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Hi everyone, great work going on here! Peter, what a great start, you've really got the impressionist style going!

Deeja, can't wait to see Little Irene developed.

Elizabeth, great choice - I really like that pick - the thought of the veil terrifies me! Good luck!

I've found a board that I've got cut that is close to the proportions of umbrellas so am prepping that tonight and working on the drawing. Will post as soon as I've got it down. I think I'll just have to crop a tiny bit of the top - or maybe a bit of top and bottom, I'll see when I've got it scaled up. Have been reading the Renoir book - as well as fun this is educational too!

Thanks again Janet!

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Peter looking good, did you know it took Renoir 4 years to paint that picture. He started the right side during his impressionisms era and finished it after he started painting much tighter. That is why the right side has a misty quality and the left is much tight.

So far I have managed to keep my palette to titanium white, pthalo blue, cad red med, cad yellow and van dyke brown. I have a under paint of yellow on the hair and blue on the dress. Still have to work on the face and hands more.

So here is the lates update.

Janet thank you so much for starting this.

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Peter, I'm glad you like the site. You're painting is looking great! I agree with everyone else you're really doing great at getting the Renoir loose strokes.

Elizabeth, You're welcome. I'm glad the site was helpful. I'm glad the MAPS is turning into a learning experience for you... I'm finding the same thing. I love to learn. I went out and purchased a laptop today... new toy...yay! Now I can have my computer next to my easle.

Alison, You're welcome. I had the same problem with scaling that you're running into I decided to just leave about an inch at the bottom of my canvas.

Susan, I have no idea which one is the most accurate. I wonder myself... I guess I'll have to visit some museums. Twist my arm. I'll probably just keep choosing the one that appeals to me the most.

Dejaa, You're welcome. Your painting is looking beautiful...very delicate.

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

I'm confused.

Is it the objective of MAPS for us to DUPLICATE a masterwork, INTERPRET a masterwork, or do a painting in the STYLE of the master?

Or, all of the above?

Jim

Hi Jim!

Janet will be along to give you further details, but yes, any or all of what you said. Most of us have chosen a Renoir painting to copy or a section of, though it would be perfectly fine to do a reference of your own choosing in his style. We'd love to have you join us!

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Hi Jim! Any of the above. As long as you're learning something from Renoir that is the main goal. Which ever route someone chooses to do so is not important. It's not the road you take... it's the journey. I hope this clarifies things a little. If not let me know. As Elizabeth said we'd love to have you join us.

Here is an update, these figures are taking a long time. I'll be at this for a while but I'm enjoying it. Every figure feels like a seperate painting.
