Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Ok...now I am confused are we supposed to copy one of his works?....or do one of our own in his style?...or either?? I already started a 16x20 canvas board with a copy. In fact I actually went to the museum at the university (did not even know we had one till a couple weeks ago... ), and was amazed that there were quite a number of copies of masters there....of course they were by the lady who the museum is named after... Not too many paintings, really, a few interesting things...they actually have a Georgia O'Keefe...and it is possible that the others were famous outside of Mississippi, too...but I had never heard of them.

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

susan, i believe you can approach your work in whatever manner you choose to do as long as it is with a renoir painting in mind ... either a concerted copy ... or a version of your own fashion ... assaf has chosen to stylize his painting of his own references similar to that of a particular renoir painting ... not one approach is better or more right than another ... think renoir ... in whichever manner you wish ... just enjoy it ... and paint it ... undoubtably it'll be a learning process too ... that's what it's all about ...

it's fabulous that you've started yours already and have done the research that you have !! ... again ... that's what it's all about !!

Hi Susan! Violet summed it up beautifully! You're so lucky to have a decent museum in your area. The only museum that I have in my town is a train museum. Yawn lol I do travel to Toronto and Ottawa to visit the museums in those cities. I'll be starting my Renoir to day I chose The Luncheon of the Boating Party so I'll be working on it for a while. I'll just concentrate on a small area at a time working from the bg to the foreground.

Have canvas, Have reference, and will start mine this weekend. I am exicted and scared at the same time.

Growing up a print of a painting of a beautiful red haired girl hung over my bed for as long as I could remember. I don't even know if my mother realized what what the painting was. Through time flood and fire I no longer have that painting so that is the one I am going to attempt.

Mlle. Irene Cahen d'Anvers, 1880 or Little Irene

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Well I thought I would do a small 8x10 practice piece of the Dancer before attempting a larger one. What I learnt was I can't paint faces or hands so I may have to go with one of his still lifes
Here is my first effort:

I also had a hard time blending the background (or not blending)
I'm going to do some more research and choose a different reference.

Hi Dejaa! Welcome aboard... sorry to hear of the loss of the painting. Looking forward to seeing your Little Irene.

Hi Lillian! I think you did a beautiful job on the face and hands. The whole painting is beautiful!

Ok, started the transfer of my The Luncheon of the Boating Party transfer paper shifted and things may be a little out of place. lol I may have bit off a little more than I can chew with this one but I'm going to give it a try.

Thank you Janet for the kind comments. I really admire that you are taking on such a challege. I see that you've painted a lot of portraits, which is something I wish I could do better. Looking forward to seeing some progress pictures.

Violet, thank you! I've been looking through his paintings and still haven't decided what to try. Have you chosen one yet?

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Janet, as far as decent goes, I guess it is ok...and it probably only has what is there due to Ole Miss...cause the town is really small.

Wow, Lillian...dang girl...that is great...looking really good to me ...especially the background.

I chose Jeunes filles au piano (Girls at the Piano), because I have always liked it. Here is where I am at so far, obviously a long way from done, but just had to get some color on it all I do find that when I scan it in pieces and then put them together, I see alot of the problem areas. Maybe I should do it this way, instead of getting a new camera? ...not.

What happens if it ends up more of our style than theirs? I am going to try, and make it look as much like his as I can, but somehow I am sure that I will NOT do that the way he did. I know I did put paint on the canvas (board) differently than I usually do, but from what I can see, he used alot smoother look than I always do.

I am not sure that I have ever done any two paintings in quite the same way...is that unusual, or normal? It does make it hard to recapture a look from one into another...sigh.

Anyway, I figure that next I just take it one "square" at a time, and try and achieve his look. Should be interesting, anyway.

Here's mine....

Then his...

Oops...think I have that backwards... sorry, couldn't resist.

Lillian, I'll post my progress as soon as a get one of the figures in. I'm working on the landscape part rite now. It's going to be slow going.

Susan, this is looking great... you never cease to amaze me. I don't think we can avoid using our style and that's not a problem. But one thing, I don't know if you've noticed this yet, that when you're painting from a master you pick up tips on how to paint.

Susan, I really like the painting you chose, and wow what a great start!
Thank you for the comments, actually the background only took about 5 min. to do after I had chosen the colours.

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

Lillian, I have to disagree with you about your not being able to do faces and hands. ESPECIALLY considering the small size of your dancer, the face and hands are very well done. By the way, that background sings! Wonderful painting overall too; it looks SO close to the original!!!!

Susan, I was blown away when I saw yours! You're doing excellently on your painting. Great body language on the two girls and all the elements look well placed and proportioned. This will be a treat to see as you develop it further!!!!!

I plan on picking something to start on over the weekend, and a red reference for Michelle's challenge. I'm itching to get started; just need some time!

Elizabeth

Re: MAPS - Masters’ Acrylic Painting Studies (Renoir) April/May, 2008

I decided to go with the 2 girl composition, and I have the canvas ready. Tomorrow I'll start with the sketches and post them. I'll probably have to stretch it over a few weeks... But I'll post updates when appropriate.

Lillian, this looks so good! The soft violets are very much in the Ronoir style.

Susan, I'm looking forward to see how your painting turns up. Your reference is one of my favorites.

Assaf, looking forward to seeing your sketches.

Ok, I didn't do much on my painting. Toned the canvase with Yellow Oxide plus white... not so sure that was a great idea.
