Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Susan....Your mojo is definitely working now. Keep up the good work. These look great.

Colin....Your floats look great and so big! I agree with Maureen about the red one. Now go enjoy yourself.

Here is my revised version incorporating the insightful hints of Colin and Maureen. I hope I have done it right.Attachment 814743

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

I have great admiration for you with this Cindy!

OK, it's a work from Chardin but I really like your objects, glass and others, and love the soft and hard, lost and found edges! The table edge is beautiful, the hint of light left of the carafe to give that hard edge - so subtle.
Well done - frame it!

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Hi Maureen and PALs.

I've been following this thread and it is packed full of great information (thanks Maureen) and wonderful painting studies by the PALs. I hope to take part at some point but August is shaping up to be a really busy month. I'll be visiting my son and his family in Michigan, dog sitting for my daughter and having the carpet in my bedroom/studio replaced with wood laminate. I will do my best to participate at some point, but I will also save this thread for future reference.

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Susan - it's just occurred to me that the problem with the ellipse earlier may have been the ref being off rather than your mistake!

I was looking at a ref on the comp and thought 'Aye, aye, that's not straight!'
The glasses on one side of the photo were OK but the camera had altered the perspective on the left one and the verticals were not vertical and horizontals not horizontal ...... probably the focussing was too close (by me!) so some appeared wrong!

Just thought it's worth considering!

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Very good Cindy.

Thanks for the comments on mine. Not surprised the red float is the stand out as it is the best to my eye as well. I started with that one so it has more attention and layers of paint on it, which goes to show the importance of building up the layers in acrylics. I am also pleased with the colour - used Stevenson cadmium red middle. It is definitely a WIP at the moment, but it's on its way.

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Thanks, Colin! I love your floats! Have fun while you are gone!

Maureen, thank you! The bottle ref is from Paint My Photo...they had lots of "glass" stuff. "Our" lilbelle/Lillian has pics there

Cindy...wow!! looks great!

Hi Judy!!

Maureen...I am willing to go with the ref being off...or it could be an antique...hand blown and crooked...

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Susan, I looked at your work on your blog and you do “everything!” Pets, still life, landscapes, seascapes, portraits and nudes! WOW! Don’t worry about over-posting, I don’t mind, I like looking at them all!

Cindy, I love the subtle blending of the color and the colors themselves! And what Maureen said about the lost/found/hard/soft edges, I’m still learning about and you give a wonderful sample of those techniques in this painting!

Cristine, WOW! 3 paintings and all wonderful!

Colin, I also like the red one, it’s very “glassy”

I'm working on my 2nd painting of the cropped version of floats. I'm not 'timing' this either, just working on it when I feel 'inspired' which hasn't been happening often lately. Some days it just sits there... <shrug>

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

I set up the painting from life exercise and intended to just do a quick 10 minute study but I really started to get into it and the more I looked the more I saw. It is just on a piece of cardboard and measures about 5 x 7 inches and I kept at it for about 2 hours. I kept playing with purple and green to get the darks and over did it. There should be much more yellow showing in the objects. I went straight in with the paint without drawing and the shapes are off as well but I have left it set up and might give it another go but use canvas this time and draw it up first.
This is a photo of the set up

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

Wow Christine! there's a lot of painting in this for a 7x5 piece!

It really does look like glass too, even though it is not ultra-realistic but is in your on style.
Bravo - love the chunky feel of this!

Re: PAL (Paint-a Long): Painting glass and Metal

An exercise! 2 hrs - from an early set-up and no colour, this is the way it printed so just went with it. Tried desperately not to get bogged down - so hard!

Never mind, it's a bit glass-like and I have another set up in the box ready - hopefully a bit more interesting.
