Re: PAINT-A-LONG anyone interested in joining us?

I'm getting frustrated, it's been raining here day and night for forever and too dark to paint in my garage (my usual haunt) so I had to do something, so today I tried my hand at a pastel version, working on the kitchen bench. Not the right forum but I'm waiting for decent light so I can paint the paint-along.

Colin, your'e so funny. You're right a rigger is a thin brush.

Paul, that's lovely, it's so aggravating when the light isn't right. We've had grey day after grey day here so when the sun finally came out, people were so happy!

Re: PAINT-A-LONG anyone interested in joining us?

That is really good, Paul. Light and airy, like the mood of the reference photo. I love your grass -- er, oats. And you were worried about the lighting conditions, but one wouldn't know there was any problem from the painting.

Thanks for the info Virginia.

Re: PAINT-A-LONG anyone interested in joining us?

Sorry to be late back Peeps - other things to do!

Colin - that sky is looking really good - blending is lovely
The grass clump is better too ...... what kind of brush are you using? If you use a flat, turning it on its side allows thin strokes and if you take the brush up/down quickly, it will make a different mark - and break the edges.
This is looking good

Judy - this is looking very nice too - lovely gentle sky and already there's distance with the water.
Can I suggest one thing? .... try not to let the composition fall away on the left there - see how the line of dune and railing takes the eye down to the edge? Even making the railing taller as it comes forward might help there - as would another dune behind.

Lin - welcome! Do jump in too - the water's fine

Virginia - I absolutely love the way this has developed - there's a dynamism to it in the grasses and a lyrical rhythm with the fences. Those bits of black peeping through are really delightful - I think this is a super piece of work.
That detail of the main fence post and grasses would make a lovely painting on its own!

Paul - so glad you got something down - and as it's a pastel prep for the acrylic version we'll keep it!
It's very tranquil and pretty - so soft. I like the grasses particularly.
I know you're approaching autumn and winter - and we 're looking forward to Spring - but the greyness is very familiar! Longing for bright light

************

Here's the latest stage of mine - possibly finished, not sure!

Painted the grass, fences and then the oats - used a rigger too Colin for those. Yes, a fine brush with a long head that's flexible and allows lightly painted lines.
More controllable than a cat's tail

I like the way, having used the same ref., we have all/are all making our own versions - each one is different.

Looking forward to seeing more

Re: PAINT-A-LONG anyone interested in joining us?

Thank you all for the comments, I agree with Maureen, a superb variety of results from a single reference. For painting fine lines I still use my old signwriting brushes, outliners or fineliners in a range of sizes available from signwriting supplies. I just saw some blue sky, just maybe......

Re: PAINT-A-LONG anyone interested in joining us?

Just catching up on this thread. So many beautiful works to view!
Maureen, What a lovely finish. It was wonderful watching the various stages of your work. Thank you!
April, Unique choice of support. You can use this a study for one on canvas . Like the background sky and sea. Nice addition of birds.
Colin, coming alone very nice. Now, I am curious to try out the mister. I usually just work really fast when blending large areas
Judy, Great start. I especially like the suggestion of waves in the water.
Virginia, such a beautiful finish. I simply love the foreground fence, grass and sea oats. Very interesting use of black
Paul, your pastel sketch is lovely. Looking forward to your acrylic as you are quite the sea expert
Cindy, It looks great. Love the subtle colors . Portray's a lovely atmosphere.

Re: PAINT-A-LONG anyone interested in joining us?

Hi Gang
Thank you for your comments

......... I'm wondering if you'd like a change of direction on the next one and try Virginia's method of painting on black!

Also - any ideas on the type of subject? I don't want to impose my choices each time

Maureen....I'm up for painting on black. How about sea creatures? Or food? Or kitchen items?
