As for your question re. what to call stepping back and looking at a painting, I usually call it "stepping back and looking at a painting", while if someone can't tell what I've drawn until I point it out, I use the term "subtle" for the drawing, and "stupid" for the other person. (Self criticism is not one of my strong points). Not much help, I guess
