Re: Self Portraits

Handsome hos'! And you're riding a pretty nice looking horse, too ;-)
Seriously, though, your Shonkin reminds me a bit of my aunt's favourite horse, "Sally" who was a sabino pinto mare.

Re: Self Portraits

Why, thank you, Tania! Long time ago now. He was born on the Shonkin River east of the Great Divide here in in Montana. He stood an honest 16.3 hands. Shonk won me a lot of $5 bets on how far he could back up in a straight line.
At that time we had 24 Morgan mares, 3 geldings and a Morgan stud horse on the place. Shonkin lived to 21 years of age.

I missed a lot of opportunites to do more personal Scraperboard renderings back then. The commercial aspect made our income, but you can get caught up in all that and ignore the more enjoyable type artwork. Don't let that happen to you.

Re: Self Portraits

Great photo, Pierre!
Shonkin sounds like one of those "once in a lifetime" horses. When I lived at home, my horse was a Percheron/? cross named "Rusty" (for the sparse roan flecks he had scattered across his mainly grey coat).

Rusty made you work to catch him, but once caught a baby could have ridden him. Pretty much everyone within a twenty mile radius of our farm learned to ride on Rusty. When I was a teenager I would sit my younger cousins up on his back, hand them the reins, then walk around the yard, but no matter what they did with the reins Rusty'd follow me. He was the most sensible horse I've ever known. He was about 27 or so when he died, and sadly, I don't think I have one decent photo of him - I guess in my youth I thought he would simply live forever.
