Here is what I like to do very quickly when I don’t have much longer time to paint. Basically quick studies of values, colors, edges and proportions. But it can also help you plan your painting, especially if you want to paint in big size.

Very nice. It’s a great reminder to me to do value sketches and decide on my palette before starting larger works! Thanks for sharing.

                Hi Kate,

Yes, you’re right. Thumbnail sketches are very useful to sharpen our composition skills and to design the values before doing larger works.

Excellent lesson/reminder. The sketches are good too!

Thank you, Frank. My full time job prevents me from doing serious paintings. So unless I am on vacation, I can paint big.

                            Gorgeous sketches!
(Unfortunately I’m too lazy for sketches.)

Good point. If you work out compositional issues and a value sketch before you start, the final painting will have a better chance of success.

Ernst, I don’t always do thumbnail sketch for every painting, either. These little sketches are good when you only have 15 minutes.

Rich, true. Value is the most important element after proportion.

Very nice sketches, David, and a good reminder!
