I thought I would try a WIP”
This is Gouache, 9″x12″ on 140lb watercolor paper
First picture is my setup to use for reference.
The second is my pencil drawing.
The third is my first pass with gouache.I wanted the background to go from cool colors
on top moving to warm colors downward.
I might change the values and colors slightly.
I’m just going to put in a few details and tweek it a bit.C&C welcome.

I will darken the background a little.
My goal is to keep all the values on
the light side (high key) in this painting,
(trying to give it more atmosphere).
I don’t know if that will work or not
but I’m going to try it.August 28, 2019 at 5:42 pm #872635Here’s the latest.
I darkened the background some and added
some green to it about two thirds of the
way up to echo the green on the shadow
side of the containers.
I also fixed the lid on the canister.
I also want to add some light yellow ochre
on the cantainers to warm them up a bit.
Plus some minor fixes to the containers.August 29, 2019 at 10:46 am #872641It is interesting to follow. Making adjustments seems tough in gouache. Gary
"Painting is a verb"
August 29, 2019 at 12:03 pm #872636I agree that making adjustments is difficult with gouache.
For me the toughest thing is that it drys darker than when
I apply it. Secondly, I can put one layer of paint over
another but if I try a third layer it affects the layer underneath.
So I end up removing all of the paint in that area with a
wet cotton cloth and then make the change. It’s a pain in the neck.August 29, 2019 at 12:47 pm #872633Check out Sandra Ruberto on Youtube, she uses gouache straight from the tube or with very little water o as not to disturb the underlying paint. Another excellent teacher is Lena Rivo.

I think I’m finished with this one.
Added some color to the containers and
I changed my lighting for this photo.
I’m semi-pleased with the result:) .August 30, 2019 at 6:44 pm #872642It looks better to me with the slightly darker backgrounds, bringing the principal objects forward. Gary
"Painting is a verb"
August 30, 2019 at 11:47 pm #872638Yes, I think it helped. It’s a pretty boring painting to
look at but it was good practice for doing white objects.
Thanks for the comment.August 31, 2019 at 2:55 pm #872640Very nice, Perry. I like the darker background also. The only crit I have is that the objects are pretty much the same color with little contrast or anything to distinguish one from another. Of course, I realize they’re of the same material and pretty much on the same plane but you could use a little artist license to liven them up a little.

August 31, 2019 at 5:24 pm #872639Thanks for the crit ABA. I’m going to
wipe the paint from it and try it again
with color this time. -
