I have been experimenting adding Golden heavy gel gloss to my Golden and Liquitex heavy body paint. I am trying to create a shorter paint that retains brushstrokes. This has been successful, but I am wondering whether anyone knows of a manufacturer that makes a paint that is heavier body than Golden, Liquitex, M. Graham, and Winsor and Newton. All of these seem to me to be about the same viscosity out of the tube. The reason I am asking is that although I like the results I am getting, it is a lot of work to mix the heavy gel gloss into every puddle of paint. I know that Liquitex used to make a super heavy body paint, but that has been discontinued, and I never tried it. Thanks for any thoughts you have.

May 29, 2017 at 9:36 pm #1269936You could get some small containers and pre-mix tube paint with gel medium.
Then you wouldn’t have to mix in the gel medium as you paint – which would make the painting process go a lot faster and smoother. Also you might try using marble dust (calcium carbonate) as an alternative to gel medium – much cheaper and has a thickening effect.

June 1, 2017 at 5:53 am #1269898I too wanted to try out Liquitex Super Heavy Body, only to find it was discontinued about 10 years ago. I too like acrylics that are thick out of the tube – not needing to constantly add medium, which can be tedious.
Of the regular Heavy Body acrylics I’ve tried (i.e. not super heavy body or structural), Tri-Art High Viscosity acrylics seem the thickest…a bit thicker than Golden HB or Liquitex HB. Like Golden, it has large natural variations in gloss level among colors (some are super glossy), and seems to have similarly high pigment levels. However I hate the packaging.
Letting any brand of Heavy Body paint blobs simply sit out on the palette for 10-20 minutes before using (and not adding water) will really thicken it up, allowing brush stroke retention and a working feel close to oil paint.
June 1, 2017 at 10:55 am #1269911Thank you, Patrick. Have you compared Tri-Art to Matisse Structure acrylics? The Tri-Art packaging is roundly panned on the Dick Blick reviews. I should buy a tube of each to try out.

June 2, 2017 at 12:46 am #1269899David, I’ve never tried Matisse Structure acrylics – but if I can find them here in Canada I’ll try them. I’m glad I’m not the only only one who hates the Tri-Art packaging – it’s a shame because the paint inside is wonderful. P.S. you taught me a new meaning for ‘pan’ as a verb

Dick Blick does not carry them but Jerry’s Artorama does online.

June 2, 2017 at 9:21 pm #1269913I ordered a starter set of Matisse Structure Acylics from Jerry’s, and one jar of Tri-Art from Dickblick. Interesting to note that for the large majority of Tri-Art colors offered by Dickblick they sell them only in jars, not tubes. I guess that would take care of the complaint about the packaging. I’ll report back after I receive them.

June 3, 2017 at 2:34 am #1269900What color of Tri-Art did you get? (I’m assuming you got the Finest/High Viscosity…which is the good stuff). An amazon too, they’re mostly in jar form now. Hopefully they’re working on developing better tubes.
June 3, 2017 at 8:12 am #1269914Titanium White, on the theory that you can never have too much of it.
