Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2020: optional "snow" theme!

My New Year's resolution has been to spend more time on my paintings, to produce some more finished works. This may be the rare New Year's resolution that I actually honor! In that spirit, for the past week, I've been working on a portrait that started with a brief live sitting but since has been based on the photos I took at that first session. I'll have to re-read my rules to see whether I can post it here! In the meantime, I'll go post it in the portrait forum.

Wow, that looks terrific, Tom! The drawing seems impeccable, and I like the lighting on her face. How long did you have with the model? Also, is this a class, or do you just pool resources with other artists to hire a model?

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2020: optional "snow" theme!

Itís a weekly group with a model but no instructor. The model stays about 2.5 hours with short breaks every 20 minutes. I showed up late so this view was the only option for me, but I like the way it turned out.

The artists chip in $5 each per session to pay the model. Iíve only been going for two weeks but Iím also taking a portraiture class once a week for three hours, however, thereís no model in the class. Iíll probably work on the life painting in class next time as the skin tones actually arenít dark enough.

Nice work Tom. Very convincing from life work.

Geoff, I hope you will show your portrait effort here as you work from to cover your underpainting.

I did a small plein air sketch today. I sat in the car. It was about 40 and mostly cloudy. Our snow has largely melted. The parking lot filled up with construction rigs as I worked. I am not much of a plein air painter but it was good to get out. Gary

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2020: optional "snow" theme!

Gary, that's a pretty good plein air painting for someone who says he's "not much of a plein air painter." Nice composition, nice drawing, nice color.

You're hardier than me, I'll say that; I rarely get up the energy to go outside to paint in 40 degree weather.

I probably will post my portrait as I work on it from life. We're doing a sitting this weekend, so we'll see. Now that I have a brunaille done, with a limited time for sitting, I assume I should focus on the model's face and features, not so much on her clothing or the background? That's what I do when I paint alla prima -- get the model mostly done first, then start filling in the background and clothing. Sort of the opposite of what I do painting plein air, where I go from back to front.

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2020: optional "snow" theme!

In life class, our instructor urged us to experiment today -- to block in shapes and masses and not fuss about the drawing. My resulting picture wasn't my best -- I never got around to putting in the ear -- but it was good to try something different. "Study of Moe," oil on panel, 11" x 14."

Interesting exercise and I would say it was a good start. Portrait without a drawing must feel like the trapeze without a net? Gary

Heh, yep. To me, a portrait is all about the drawing. Next time, I'll go back to my usual method, which is to grind hard on the drawing before getting fancy with brushwork.

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2020: optional "snow" theme!

Hi everybody, itís been a while since I posted here. Been looking in though. Iíve returned to painting from life, as working from photo refs seemed to be getting stale. Was going to paint snow in my backyard, looking through a sliding glass door, but came up with another still life.
Hereís a close up of a 12Ē x 16Ē work in progress. Basket of oranges is the focal point of the painting. I like how this bowl is working.

That looks great, Boogiechile! The highlights on the bowl are just right, and the oranges look tasty. Glad to see you posting here again! And yes, I know what you mean about painting from photos getting stale.

Patrick, I would give a lot to be able to paint still life works as well as you. Gary

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2020: optional "snow" theme!

I added another layer of paint to my portrait of the studio model, matching her actual skin tones much more closely. I might need to glaze one more layer in red-orange.

Tom, nice glazing. I like the new effects on the nose and eyes in particular.

You might want to repost this second layer in the February thread so everyone can see it. I'm off to start that thread now.
