Sam this is fantastic. I consider you among the best artists at wetcanvas. This demo is extremely valuable to those who havent reached your level of painting.

Re: Fur Demo: Hairy Stick or Airbrush!

Wow, thanks Chris! I can assure though, that there are tons of outstanding and exceptional artists here on WC!

Henk, based on what I can see, it looks great!

Your right, the hairs will disappear until they begin to get some depth to them. This can often mean that your darkest layer was not dark enough when you started, you will learn to tell this as you practice the technique!

I say that you should treat this technique just like your normal painting process, your just adding white hairs in between your normal layers! As you add the next layer of white hairs, you will notice the "under" layers are gradually getting darker. Hers the beauty of the technique, you can always add another layer of the white hairs to lighten if you think it's too dark!

Keep us posted henk my friend!

I knew this was a dogs ear!

Re: Fur Demo: Hairy Stick or Airbrush!

Sam, your demo of how to render fur in my view is legendary. Like all other textures, it is a matter of attempting to apply logic by first understanding what you see and then planning how to spray and / or paint it. It is a perfect example of what I try to convey to my students: An observer becomes aware of the atmosphere in an image, not necessarily needing to be aware of what it is that causes the perception. Artists on the other hand must be aware of what they do to create an image that actually contains the details that contribute to the atmosphere. And then of course they need the skills to make those details... A very informative post! Thank you.

Re: Fur Demo: Hairy Stick or Airbrush!

Thank you Rage!

After the fact, I will often find a detail that I may have overlooked! It is hard to place into words what you may do and why in any given technique. My true concerns when I create these demos are, am I conveying the information that will allow the reader to understand and hopefully recreate the process. It's hard to judge this when you have no feedback to evaluate!

I think Fur never looks quite right when its totally airbrushed, good 'ol Hairy sticks added to it really pul it off! Thanks for the tips, gonan use them next time fur or hair comes into play.

Re: Fur Demo: Hairy Stick or Airbrush!

Thanks to both of you!

Corrado - I can make fur look fairly real using just the airbrush, however, I prefer the hairy stick for speed and finite accuracy.
