Night at the Colosseum

As I look at the sky, I probably should have done this in acrylic. The brush strokes don't look quite as bad in real life. Painted on 9x12 Fluid 140lb CP paper with W&N paints using my own reference photo and a book I picked up when I visited Rome last fall.

Re: Night at the Colosseum

I love it!

As you mentioned about the brush strokes - scans / pictures sometimes change our paintings.

I'm unsure, but perhaps making the outer wall a *little* darker will make those "inner" lights pop a bit, because of the greater contrast?

I imagine a very thin glaze of blue.

Though I'm unsure, i'm not very experience with night scenes

Re: Night at the Colosseum

Beautiful floodlit scene Kate. Very effective. The sky brushstrokes don't bother me. You could, perhaps have gone even darker with the night sky?

See what those ancient Greeks missed without floodlights!

Re: Night at the Colosseum

Thanks Mike - I might try one more wash on the sky.
