Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

When I do use tube paint, this 11x14" composition will probably be on an 11x14" stretched canvas. Is this size composition too large for that size canvas? Is the sky too busy, or is it good energy?
These colors were used for the GREEN challenge. What are your thoughts on these colors for their clothing in the next one? Anything else? Thanks!

The green clothes are cool as they are muted. The sky isn't too busy.
Your composition is fine; I would give the people a breathing space bottom, left and right of the canvas so they don't look squashed in. In your next painting you could look if you can get their kneeling attitude more pronounced/obvious?

Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

Thanks--good ideas. I may go for a slightly larger canvas--I think I have 12x16". I'll work on kneeling positioning, see what I can do.

Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

This looks really good so far, ntl! A very challenging sketch, lots of details here. I love your yellows. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this one.

How you all manage such detail with your OPs is a wonder to me.
Well, remember a lot of us, myself included, use tools to get those small details in. Stumps, tortillons, and colored pencils to really get tiny lines are essential. I also have a wide assortment of those clay shapers, some with the light gray tips, some the "firmer" black tips, and then some red-tipped ones that are labled simply "paint movers" or something like that. Until I got better at handling these tools, I agree that details using OP's is pretty challenging.

I have been scrolling through and found the post about W&N oil bars. Now I know why they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

Has anyone been using oil sticks with cold wax medium (cwm)? I cannot find much information about cwm anywhere on wetcanvas.

Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

I have duplicates of some bars--some never used, some lightly that I'd be willing to sell at cost pus shipping (I'm in USA). Contact me if interested.

My first attempt to use oil sticks. It is definitely much different than any other media I have used so far.

Hi Chstephens. Welcome to the op forum! A great effort for your first try at oil bars. When dry the oil bars can be layered for more detailing.

Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

Thank you tuscanny. I am several layers in already. I think I will finish it off with oils and a brush. This is quite small. It is about 6.5 x 7.75". It was a free gesso board, but a strange size overall. It has made it almost impossible to get any kind of detail (although I tend towards more abstract/expressionist work anyway).

Re: The Oil Stick Party - Join In!

Welcome to the OP forum, Chstephens! I'm loving this portrait already, especially the work around the eyes. They look terrific. I look forward to seeing your finished piece, as it sounds like you're going to complete with oils and brushwork.

Thank you. I am going to take my time and consider my next steps. I tend to ruin work when I am trying to finish it.
