Portrait of a statue
Hereís a painting that I just finished of a head carving at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh. The museum doesnít allow artists to paint its works from life, so I painted it from a photo that I took. Sorry, I neglected to photograph the identification label, but I think itís a Roman or Greek carving from an anonymous artist. I add that info later.
Iím currently taking a portrait class, and this seemed like a good exercise. I mainly focused on the composition and values since the stone is pretty uniform in color. Painted in oils on a 9x12 canvas panel.
