Can you talk about your decision to paint on the raw wood? I use canvas, so it’s not a loaded question...I am wondering what gesso might or might do in this case.

Backgrounds are my biggest fear. Lol. I use gesso to prime the area to be painted. I will use a wood stain on the background at the end to keep the features of the wood and let that add some interest.

That's going to be beautiful! I paint sometimes on wood. I have a pile of old, aged, previously painted wood board in the shed that I occasionally paint on, after some sanding and a little repainting or staining. Its a good surface. I have not found it hard to paint on.

Thanks Sheryl! You do such stunning work, your encouragement is appreciated.
I've done a bunch of work on some birch cuts from a tree we cut down in our yard. I like that each piece of wood is unique.

Got it. I did some cardinals on slate and did something similar. What about backgrounds gives you pause?

Re: WOYE: What's on Your Easel? 2020

I think it is a number of things. When I start with a background, I feel I get too involved in detail, trying to get the right perspective, trying to set a scene that doesn't take away from the focal point, placement of objects that won't interfere with the foreground... many times, I get halfway through all this and end up jumping ship and never finishing the piece.

Thank you, Konfuzd! I stained some old wood pieces today to paint on. I have a large stash of old, weathered fence boards. Most are beat up white but some are plain for staining.

You stain before painting? Does it affect the paint at all?

Very beautiful, I love the subtle tones used to blend the painting together, with the yellow foliage just giving it the extra punch.
I wondered if perhaps the sky might have been slightly lighter than the colour of the bank but all in all , it looks very pleasing.
Beaut job.

Lovely colour, it's calming, yet vibrant. Well done!

Not quite ready to call this one done, but
I think I need a bit of a break. Quite happy with the progress to this point.
