Re: QDC - our Quick-Dry-Cafe ..... come chat!

Happy new year! Sorry I kinda just disappeared. Every year we stay at a hotel an hour away with friends. We get pool side rooms and this year we were the only ones in that area of the hotel. And the restaurant always has an excellent meal for New year's eve.

Sad to hear that things are not getting better in Australia. It seems like with all our technology we should be able to put fires out. The smart people of the world need to get on that.

Well, 2019 went by in a flash. I didn't even have time to lose weight lol. I hope to be more productive and less lazy this year. (I say that every year. )

Re: QDC - our Quick-Dry-Cafe ..... come chat!

Wish we could send some of this rain your way, Merri. What a catastrophe it is. We did hear about the controversy over the Sydney fireworks.

I am being very lazy today. I have to go for some minor surgery around my eyes tomorrow to get rid of some benign cysts. The procedure is not covered by our health care system, so I have to shell out a lot of $$$ I would rather spend on a plane ticket to Tokyo or Timbuktu. . I just hope, the surgeon wasn't partying too heavily on New Years so that his hands are steady.

I know it Blue and I was mad at myself too! As of yesterday, January 1 I've been living here, in this apartment right in the middle of the city for one decade! A decade of complaining it's too small and then not getting out of it to see the city! But, to be honest, crowds of people is something I just dread! I'm going to keep thinking of excuses but that's all they are. Some are better or more truthful than others though.

Merri, I do keep thinking about you and others in Oz. I used to volunteer in Emergency Animal Rescue and was always so afraid I'd be called to a fire situation. Storms seem more predictable than fires, especially wildfire. And because I had more experience than most other volunteers I had the "farm animals". There's never a good way to bring a horse or some cows around fire. (NO ONE say a barbecue!) While many think of other humans my brain gets stuck thinking about the animals who are almost always innocent in these types of emergencies. Please be safe!

Sheila and the voices in my head!

Re: QDC - our Quick-Dry-Cafe ..... come chat!

Lady Carol, fingers crossed for yours and yes, good idea, don't come because the mood is turning to anger.

LavenderFrost - Thank you... yes it is dreadfully sad.

Sheila, thanks for your thoughts.

ColinS - Aye, I wish for your rain too. Thank you for the thought.
We have a cooler day today, here in my valley and a sprinkling of rain.
( nothing of substance - 2 drips and a drop )

New neighbors are getting married in their garden today. Everyone has been invited to dance to a Brazilian band - via a letterbox drop.
Sounds cheery so I might walk down the road and have a look.

Cheers
Merri

Colin : Hope your eyes are good now, and trusting the surgeon had steady hands.

Maureen, Angry people. yes he had a couple of knuckle sandwiches for lunch, and is eating humble pie for sweets.

I am sure that saying originated in UK.

Well, it's the last day of holidays for us. Back to school nights. I don't mind school days, it's having to get to bed early and having short evenings that's a pain. lol

The decision is Sydney and NZ. The bad thing is that dad is rather ill with leukemia and I don't know how much longer he will be sucking air.

Sorry to hear it Lady Carol, that is not good re your dad.
But welcome home when you get here, and I hear that NZ is a gorgeous place..
Can you kidnap Jacinda Ardern and bring her to Aus. We would have her as our PM in a heart beat.

Cheers

Re: QDC - our Quick-Dry-Cafe ..... come chat!

Happy New Year everyone!
Those of you who are planning to travel this year...come to BC! There are parts of BC I haven't seen yet and plan to visit. First on my list is Haida Gwaii, an almost untouched BC island group off the Pacific coast. I want to visit the Pacific Rim Park or even ...hike the West Coast Trail ...maybe... and I'd love to do a canoe trip through the Great Bear Rain Forest. I'm getting a bit old for some of these adventures. I'd have to train and prepare for a summer first, I think.

If you plan a visit to BC, cross from the US at Osoyoos,BC and go up 97 through the Okanagan Valley... (Avoid Vancouver at all costs!!) orchards and vineyards as far as you can see in all directions. Just don't come through there in July/Aug! 40c+ every single day...and DRY. Osoyoos is desert. Do a wine tour in Kelowna.

Keep going north on 97 all the way to the Arctic. North of Fort Nelson are some of the most beautiful places on Earth! Mountains, wild mountain lakes, rushing rivers and waterfalls - lots of wildlife too...its called in the brochures "Canada's Serengeti". Deer, moose, caribou, elk, bears, porcupines, beavers and so forth. Must see is Muncho Lake and Liard Hot Springs, both left as natural as possible.

Go all the way up. Tent the night of the summer solstice on the beach in Tuk, put your feet in the Arctic Ocean and watch the sun all night long. You can get there in Alaska too, but I hear that the beach in Tuk (Tuktoyaktuk) is better.

North of Whitehorse, YT is a fruit nursery where they test and grow fruit trees for the far north. They even grow apricots outside up there. Its a goal of mine to visit it and come away with some trees to plant in my yard, someday. They ship them, but BC doesn't allow fruit trees shipped into the province.

Colin can probably tell you what there is to see and do on Vancouver Island. Just a warning...The ferry is prohibitively expensive.

Disclaimer: I don't work for BC and there's no guarantee on the wildlife.

Wow...that sounds beautiful, much like NJ until they built Jersey City!...

If you like wilderness, it sounds like a nice adventure!

We keep thinking about taking a trip that way. We would be driving from Manitoba, stopping at Drumheller and West Edmonton mall, then go into BC, maybe go to the aquarium. And, uh, go through Saskatchewan and look at the wheat.
