People want me to do paintings for them.

I don't consider my work to be that good yet. And since getting back into painting I've been mostly working on small 6”x4.5” pieces as practice.
But over the last month I've had 2 people approach me about doing larger paintings for them. One of them is a friend and the other is a friend of a friend.
I’m really not sure how to go about this? I figured eventual once I had too many painting here I would try selling some of my work but I don't know that its at the level I want it to be to start putting my name out there yet. But at the same time people seem to like my work already.

"No" is an acceptable answer

It took me many years to learn that. If you don't want to do it or don't feel you're ready to do it, then don't do it. You're not obliged to!

Are they asking about commission that they choose the subject or ref, or a larger painting in your own style & your choice of subject?

Re: People want me to do paintings for them.

I am, by no means, an effective or accomplished artist, but have been asked to paint for others. With few exceptions I let them know I don't feel I'm up to the project they want. No one has gone away angry.

On the other hand, if I feel I can do a credible job, I accept the commission (only twice in 20+ years) and set a price and terms. Both prospective clients agreed to prices, but did not want to agree to the terms - that I retain all copyrights. What can I say? 🤷‍♂️

You probably know what you're capable of - go with that.

Re: People want me to do paintings for them.

The friend I don't really mind doing a painting for. I told them to find a reference picture of what they want and I figure ill do it as a gift,
The other one wants a larger landscape I'm assuming slimier to my smaller works. I haven't agreed to do anything yet.

Im just not sure if I should or not. i’m worried that putting lower quality work out now might hurt my chances later but at the same time I don't want to miss out on an opportunity.

If you look on the positive--you have a friend AND a friends friend who want to commission you so that is a big vote of confidence... I wouldn't be overly worried about your reputation, that you feel your work is not good enough yet (do you have any links to your work on the Internet?) I see a lot of artists who do fairly mediocre work but they have a lot of people following them and they make sales. You can sell AND improve simultaneously

Re: People want me to do paintings for them.

Thank you and sorry for the late reply.
I'm thinking for now offering small landscapes to people who want them at a cheap price or as gifts but I'm not going to start advising or anything at this point.
The only place I have my work posted on line is on here.

Re: People want me to do paintings for them.

You should be flattered people are already asking you do to paintings for them. Are the paintings something you think you could handle? I understand your hesitation. Maybe you could go ahead and do them, and see how they turn out; at the very least you have some more experience under your belt. If you're happy with the results, show them to your clients.

Re: People want me to do paintings for them.

Sorry somehow I missed the replies to this.
So far my paintings have been small. Mostly 4.5" x6" so I'm hesitant to go bigger until I've done a few on my own. Both people wanted larger paintings.
