Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Thanks very much, Terri and Christel! Glad you liked it too!

Terri, agree, I even think about picking up a pencil and concentrating on people postures for a while

Pale yellow Canson Mi-Teints pastel paper, size 18 x 20 cm (about 7 x 8 in).

This is not a sketch, this is a beautiful finished painting!

There's lovely work in this thread everyone

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Thanks very much, Sarah! i think it's the Senns that make it look like a real painting it's funny, some things don't take you long to paint, aren't difficult either, but they have an appealing subject in it (here it's mostly sakura in bloom and water combo), so everyone is fascinated by it. My husband was very impressed though he usually thinks of my paintings as "nice" or "good". I was like, hey, it was an easy one and it's after a tutorial! Why aren't you that impressed with paintings that took much more effort??

I also find choosing the right reference to work from makes painting much more enjoyable too.

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

You guys all have some cool stuff on here.
I can't load any of my stuff, it has to many MG's MB's or whatever.
It's great to see people using oil pastels.
Whenever I'm someplace and mention "oil" pastels, everyone removes the word pastels and starts into talking about whatever the chalky kind are called. LOL!

I don't really sketch though. I just go at it and finish a complete picture.

Hi Bobbi! If you use a photoeditor you can downsize your pics to the appropriate size of 800kb. I use FastStoneImageViewer which is an easy to use program.

Bobbi, you can use Microsoft Picture Manager to change the size of the photos - or even Paint (the standard program)! There is a "resize" option.
Looking forward to seeing your work

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Here is one I did using the water-soluble Mungyo OP's. I never knew they existed until Mira mentioned them in another post, and wanted to give them a play. I found a combination review/tutorial online for a pretty straightforward project.

I'm not a fan of watercolor, per se. This was done in my Strathmore watercolor sketchpad, but that paper still buckled when damp. Seems like a constant struggle between getting enough water on the brush to get the pigment moving, but not so much that it starts running down the sheet! Obviously, practice makes perfect, but not in my wheelhouse right now.

The white OP didn't blend over itself very well, which seems odd. To pop up that main swooshing cloud I had to reach for my Neopastels. Not overly fond of that yellow-green color, either, so I added lots of brown and white to knock it back. The rest of the colors seemed nice enough, and I also tried just dipping the OP and applying it directly to the paper - that gave a richer result.

For me, these OP's will be great for dry sketching - they're nice and soft, and I liked them better dry than trying to control them as a WC medium. Inexpensive, too!

Bright and cheerful! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them. It does seem as if they can be used best in mixed media

Thanks for commenting, Christel! Yes, they will definitely have their uses. And the blues are actually very nice.

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Nice sketch, Terri, I love that sky and the hue of the grass!

Glad you liked them I am not a fan of watercolor either and I also felt like I'd use them more as regular OPs... I haven't tried them in a separate sketch/painting yet, but I must admit I bought them mostly for creating an underpainting (using them in the same way as watercolors) and adding fine details to the OP painting using a brush (haven't tried this either).

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Recently I wanted to paint dandelions from life and wanted it really bad, but had no opportunity... so I painted a very simple imaginary scene - and felt better!

PS: later I did manage to do a short plein air dandelions painting but it didn't turn out well so I'm not posting it
