Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Sarah - love multi-talented people! I have a good friend with various hobbies, she does music and art (pencil, oil paint mostly) and she claims nothings improves her drawing/painting skills more than a music class!

I think you'd like it a lot! Compared to the cost of Pastelmat, which I also love, it's a bargain for its toughness and handling of the OPs.

Yepp, this is in Russian and it says "Euroasia" - it's the name of a chain restaurant, they serve Japanese sushi/rolls and some European food. It's on the first floor of the apartment block where I live

I'm pretty sure I'll do! btw, which side of it do you prefer, the smoother one or th rougher one? (I read a review)
Actually here in Russia both Arches Oil Paper and Pastelmat are overpriced. But I can get it cheaper from Jackson's if the size is within 30 x 40 cm (A3). The full size makes the shipping charges rise dramatically

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Guess what this sketch mean

Yes! The OPs on the sketch are Cray-Pas Specialists because recently I got my hands on the 25 pcs set still testing, I'll tell more about them when I've done at least one painting with them. But overall - very nice impression and a neat range of colors! Was pleasantly surprised about Indigo and Dioxazine Violet (wow! Only heard about this color in acrylics and I guess oil paint).

This is not a sketchbook but based on its size... it is 15 x 15 cm (6 in x 6 in), Magnani L'Antica Carteira. I've heard this is a fabulous support for the Senns. Since I got some Senns, I was really curious how they would look on a really good surface. As it is small, it wasn't expensive. But I've only tried the Specialists on it so far

A sketch thread!

I really like your landscape Mira and your sunflower Terri!

I wish to sketch more as well so..
A page from my sketchbook.. A3 craft paper with one layer of diy clear gesso..

I had a lot of fun with this one..

the eye in the corner is sennelier oil pastels.. the unidentified fruit has been too long.. but i suspect panda oil pastel and the main sketch the elephant seal with the ariel hair is van gogh.. (the black outline is ink) I did get them after all as the their price is better than the one for pandas and pentels.. I found no fault with them

Haha, I love your sketch of the Specialists, Mira! Congrats on the new Op's!

About the Arches paper, I will guess I am using the smooth side? I only buy the pads, so I pay attention when I tear off a sheet and use the face side up. To me, it's quite smooth, with some texture, but no nooks or crannies.

Hi, flug! I'm so glad you're joining us in the sketch thread. It sounds like you're using several different OP brands, it's great to experiment with them.

Fun stuff! Let's see some more.

flug, great sketches!!! I love the smooth look and nice gradients you did! I wouldn't even believe it's oil pastels, the color is soooo even and smooth!

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Hmm, Mira, that's a good question. I've had a small set of the Specialists for several months, and have yet to complete a painting with them. I probably played with them in a sketchbook, and maybe on a piece of the Arches oil paper.

They weren't cheap. I found them too slick, somewhat transparent, with pieces of pigment seeming to float in them.

I should pull out the box and force a complete sketch with them, and give them a new look.

Terri, didn't you have a set of 50?.. Or do I just remember it wrong?
Sarah says she has only used the Specialists on Pastelmat (and Hahnemuhle Velour long ago) and they work great on this surface. I noticed they crumbled on cheap paper and worked better on a pastel paper (haven't done too much experimenting yet)

Does "cheap" refer to the price here or the feel of them?
Yes, sure, it will be cool to see how they work for you this time

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

We have a fantastic event going on online: April Oil Pastel Challenge on instagram it's an event organized by Russian artists so it's hard to participate for foreigners because all the articles (posts) about OPs and live streams are in Russian.

But I just wanted to share with you that it's happening and I was very happy to find out about it. It's like dreams coming true!!! I have high expectaions that the awereness of OPs as a great and versatile medium will rise... and that art supply stores will provide us with more variety in brands! It's already happening: one of the stores started selling Neopastels open stock (more expensive than abroad, but still...)

The event also has four art supply stores as sponsors which is another great thing!

This is a very simple sketch I did for this instagram OP challenge (the topic was "winter":

A5, cheap OPs... I need to move on to A4 for sketches

I wanted to show that everything is grey during the cold season but the bright spots of kids' playgrounds it is very simple and the closeups which I took just for fun actually look more interesting than the sketch itself

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

What a cool event for you, Mira! It sounds like lots of fun. I like your sketch here - the bright colors of the playground in all that dreary snow and bare branches of winter. Nice work!

About the Specialists: yes, I meant they were expensive, and yes - I had to double check - I did splurge on a box of 50. I always loved my Cray-Pas Expressionists, so was positive I'd love the Specialists, too.

But not only did I dislike the smeared look I was getting (again, likely on cheap sketch paper), I felt a mite robbed by the selection. Only a medium gray was included - the dark gray is actually a green-gray, and the light gray is called warm gray. Usually, a light gray has a bit of blue running through it, making it cool. And that's it for the grays, which to my mind is pretty poor. Not really a 50-piece set with limited grays, TWO extending sticks, and a metallic gold and a metallic silver - two seldom-used OP's in my work. To me, that's four "filler" OP's to make a box reach 50 (and charge more).

In addition, the box itself is thin cardboard and has to be lifted with both hands or the box literally bends from the weight of the OP's and they can topple out.

Needless to say, my overall first impression wasn't great. But - they're mine, and deserve to be used on better paper for a better test. I'll give them a go on at least the smaller size Arches Oil paper. (I have smaller Pastelmat, too, but it's awfully expensive for an OP test.)

Re: Sketch thread for oil pastels 2019

Nice work Mira. Love the color amongst all the criss-crossing branches, and slight indication of a building behind it all.

So awesome to hear what's happening in Russia concerning Oil Pastels. I have a lot of Russian op artists following me on Instagram. India also. Seems I'm popular in those two countries. I wish instagram would translate better. Sometimes I get tagged in stuff and can't read anything...lol lol.

Lovely sketch, Mira! I agree, rather work in A4 until you really want to go miniature.
Great news about the interest in op's.
