"No Fish Today" WIP
This will be a guy in wet weather gear. The reference is by Leroys on SXC. It's 8" x 10" and will hopefully be my (or one of my) entry for Freefall's show in the States. I'm hoping I can cram some personality into him and I'm using my silly squiggle technique again.
I love wrinkles. I wish I had some instead of being the ravishingly gorgeously unflawed person that I am

Re: "No Fish Today" WIP
Thanks TC. I take it you are laughing at my appraisal of my good looks. I have no idea why you are laughing. "I cain't wait to look in the mirror" (as Mac Davis says)
Now I'm off to bed for some much needed (extremely much needed) beauty sleep , but not before the final update for today. It's been moving quite fast, only about four hours so far, but then again, it's only 8x10.

Patrick, that is great. I've thought about doing that exact subject. My youngest son leaves today to go crabbing in the Bering Sea.

Re: "No Fish Today" WIP
I love it! I'm from Nova Scotia and it strikes a deep chord for me (even though nobody in my family was ever in the fishery.. it's a cultural memory, yeah).
Thanks for the extreme close-up - I've been playing with different techniques, it's so hard to tell what people have used to achieve different 'far away' effects and this really is helpful.
I think his bristly whiskers are my favorite bit though!

Re: "No Fish Today" WIP
Mark, so he's a deckie on a professional boat? That's a tough job out there. We got a series over here about Canadian crab fishermen and it looked like a rediculously tough way to make a living.
Thanks Boots. The original reference refers to this guy as 'homeless' but like you say, the fishing image just won't leave my head and he looks worried, like he's had another fruitless (actually fishless) day.

Well he's homeless because the fishery collapsed!!
I don't know if your title implanted the idea or not - but he just has that old, craggy, fisherman look about him. Regardless, I love it.

I guess I shouldn't show you mine of him then. I won't be sending it over, it's in the show here for March.
Only, I made the bottom of his hand more skelational (errr, skelton?) and called it "Contemplating Mortality" heehee

Patrick, yes, he's a deckie. We have a series about crab fishing also, call "Deadliest Catch", if I remember correctly. Where they fish in the Bering Sea for opilio or market name of snow crab and king crab. Needless to say I worry a lot about my son when he's out. It is a tough job, but it pays very well.

He's on a 150 footer called the Destination, it's not on the TV series, or at least not yet.

I was thinking I had seen this ref done in scratchboard before, but couldn't recall where. But it must have been yours Eliza!
Looking great Patrick!

A bit more rugged up your way eh?
Yeah Mark, that's the same series. I buy and sell lobsters for a living (none of this art stuff ) and my guys should stop whinging. I'll get them to check out your son's lifestyle - that'll shut 'em up

Patrick, this is looking great. That skin technique of yours works really well. Eliza's version was good too. It's neat seeing how different people approach the same challenge. Looking forward to seeing more.
