Re: QDC -The Quick Dry Café - The Place to Chat

Video games lol. That's too addictive, I'm really trying to cut back.
I have all sorts of craft supplies to keep things varied.
There is also digital painting where you can play around all you want and not worry about wasting paint or having to store it someplace.

Almost forgot to show the ox after I finished fixing it. My mom loves it and even wondered if no one would notice if it went missing lol.

Yes Maureen!
I've been playing Mah jong. That calms me out.

Michelle, that's brilliant, you clever lady!

Sheila, have you ever played the real mahjong!
A group of us played regularly, as did our family, and my parents bought me a set back in the late 60s ... I still have it ... unfortunately, difficult to get a group together now.

Wow Michelle! Excellent repair of a bovine! It looks better than new! Be careful or you may have found a new vocation for you!

Maureen, I cannot even imagine how to play the in life version of Mahjong! I was playing it in Boston years ago and several aged people who only spoke Mandarin joined me. They were so fast! I know, for me, it forces me to slow down and look around. Years ago it was one of the few things I could count on when life was coming too fast.

As for the painting, I think I over tasked myself with the canvas size. All my supplies are geared to smaller sizes including brushes. It takes so long to just lay down a single layer that I am getting frustrated! I do have good ideas but I'm lacking in focus and patience. I tend to hurry up to wait for the fun to kick in!

Sounds to me Sheila that you need to get a bigger brush (es) and just let rip? It's very cathartic to just use big brush strokes and enjoy putting colour on and seeing the happy accidents that might occur!

Re: QDC -The Quick Dry Café - The Place to Chat

Maureen,
It's 10:30 PM here and I'm laying down a titanium white layer- well two. I have a 1 inch foam brush doing that. I have bigger gesso brushes but I'm going nuts with the brush marks so the foam brush is better- for now.

What I had started, well at first it was the railroad tracks, then I "deleted" that and started on a cartoonish blue dog. I liked it but had waves of angst that it was trivial and useless. Then I painted over that in a incredibly dark green- a tube someone had given me. Then covering up that horrible green...

But, although I don't like bright white, it'll be a start for a personal challenge. I have all kinds of spray applicators and different tools for moving paint. I'm going to "create" a layer of 16 by 20 that appeals to me and me only. There may be dogs and horses and zebras or there maybe only splotches of color and texture.

Even without deaths or children or holidays I've been stressing and then accomplishing nothing. So I may create a door between an old chapter of my life and a door into the new. Start now so it doesn't get dropped like New Years' resolutions. I tend toward perfectionism in so many things that I end up paralyzed accomplishing nothing. And art's supposed to be relaxing and fun!

I once ran an online support group for artists with perfectionism issues. We could barely get a single post out because the grammar would be wrong or the spelling or punctuation! I'm certainly in line with Van Gogh when it comes to insanity!

Sheila, it's only paint!

And you're only human, you're not supposed to do anything perfectly.

Painting can be both relaxing and stressful. I do have to remind myself to enjoy it sometimes. It's something you have to want to do so that the determination is there if you need to push yourself to finish.

I had a thought the other day... I like painting, I hate brushes. lol I have so many that are stiff and curly. I know I should toss them. The way I paint I want my brushes to be soft and tidy.

Bluefish,
I was born with three ears so I have an extra to give for the insanity of my craft! I do need a brother named Theo though.
