Yes, I think you're right. Some of Cassatt's work tends imore towards realism, other work more towards classic Impressionism.

Even among the French "Impressionists" there is a wide range of styles from Édouard Manet (who is barely an Impressionist to my mind), Edgar Degas , Gustave Caillebotte, Berthe Morisot, Pierre-Auguste Renoir to Claude Monet.

In Canada, Helen McNichol painted a number of images in the Impressionist style, featuring children:

Re: Different Strokes --- the November Acrylics Forum Challenge!

Impressionism has much to do with the effects of light and atmosphere on form and actually owes a lot to JMWTurner (1775-1851) ..... and in the image Colin posted you can see how McNichol reserves most of her impressionistic brush strokes for the surroundings and clothes but carefully created shapes for faces, hands, bowls and table.
One of the reasons Impressionism was first rejected was lack of precision and one of the reasons it later went out of favour was because it concentrated so much on 'impression' it tended to lose form completely..... like Monet's later waterlily garden paintings which were very abstract ...... of course, he was losing his sight by then, and (I seem to remember) also arthritic.
Of course, what the Art Establishment felt and what the public felt were often entirely different!!

I got sidetracked here .... I really wanted to visit the RIL which often has better images than I have!!

Well, I've started one, but it's in pastels, so I won't be able to post it here

I've finished mine.....not as impressionistic as I wanted it to be....kept getting more realistic with it! BUT it has got some impressionist technique with it.

Mary Mary quite contrary
How did your acrylic painting go?
"Well I had a real good idea
But grabbed pastels (they were nearer),
So now I'll have nothing to show!"

Re: Different Strokes --- the November Acrylics Forum Challenge!

lol Mary. Soft pastels? I really want to try those again. Maybe you can show us yours in the Quick Dry Cafe.

Vivien, I had the same problem. I really tried to use impressionist techniques but it ended up being a little more painterly than usual.

I have mine done as well. I had to varnish to keep me from adding detail. Lol I find Impressionism difficult but loved this challenge. Can't wait to see everyone's work.
