Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2018: optional winter theme

I had less than two hours to paint this model today, but I was pleased with the results. I’ve given him a somewhat angry expression, but it’s largely faithful to his countenance during the life session. He was holding a challenging pose, involving cuffs and ropes!

“Wayne in profile,” oil on canvas panel, 9” x 12.” C&C always welcome.

There's quite spectacular paintings done this month!

I've been painting artificial snow men. These two paintings are about hand size, 15x22 cm, oil on reused wood boards meaning there was another dry painting underneath. They both are studies for a 30 min painting challenge, mixing time not counted and I did finish both backgrounds later because 30 min is so short. Not sight-size.

Moscatel, those are really fun paintings, and they fit this month’s theme perfectly! They’re both really good likenesses. So cute!

I’m curious about the challenge you mentioned. We’re you doing this for a workshop or class, or some sort of competition? A 30-minute challenge sounds great to me.

I did some 20-minute oil sketches last week, and I was surprised how well they turned out. Painting with urgency sometimes makes me concentrate harder, forces me to make decisions quickly and decisively, etc. A good way to improve!

Re: Oil-from-life challenge, Jan. 2018: optional winter theme

Hey guys! Just wanted to stop by and say hi I haven't had the chance to paint very much the passed couple months, but I did just paint a couple this passed week, from photos (blah), hopefully I'll be able to get back into it. Its been a cold winter but we have been having some nice days getting up to the 60s so maybe I'll get to do some plein air soon. I'm not a fan of the cold weather haha.

Thanks for checking in, T1! Glad to hear you’re still painting. It’s been cold here too. I’m sure we’ll see an uptick in plein air posts here in a couple months. :-)

Anyway, I appreciate your stopping by. I look forward to seeing new stuff from you!

Haha, it looks like winter got best of us. I've started a simple still life study with an apple already, but it's not done. Mostly because of time and the fact that I'm tired lately. Whew. I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Moscatel, love your pieces like always. Your brushwork is something I hope to achieve one day.

Geoff, wow, nice portrait! Love the vibrant background and the lighting is good. I can feel the form of it.

"Jordan" - 11"x14" oil on canvas panel

So I've painted from photos a few times the passed week and its actually kind of fun after my experience in painting from life. I feel more confident to not just copy the photo and do with it whatever is best for the painting. Anyways last night I got a chance to paint from life, one of my buddies sat for me. He kept getting up a lot and I did a lot of the painting while I wasn't even able to look at him. This photo is about as good as it got, after this point I started working on it more and completely overworked it.

I like it, T1! He has an unusual expression on his face. He almost looks surprised or taken aback! Maybe he was just restless, lol. I also like the colors in his garments. Actually, when I first looked at it, I thought he was a monarch or something. The composition is regal.

All in all, a cool picture! I hope you can post more!
