"Imprimatura" is Italien and means the first wash of color on the canvas. Usually a muted earth color. Then the artist paints on top in verdaccio or grisaille or goes straight to color.
However I am painting only the imprimatura layer, in intense colors. I "erase" back to the canvas for the highlights, and add more of the same color paint for the shadows. Since these paintings must be completed all in one sitting I have to work quick, which keeps them fresh.
I started painting these during my painting a day challenge. Which is now over but I enjoyed them so much that I am making more.
