Re: Morning - C & C welcome!

With the strong shadows in foreground, there probably would be similar shadows in the back ground to match.. Like the tall buildings would make a shadow over the left smaller buildings..same shadowing for the right side tree.
The right side tree could have a more interesting shape, the outline is so round..(reflections should match the shape of any object)
Consistency..
Tree is strongly reflected, but building is not..
There is 2 very similar shaped branches in upper middle center area..forked off to the left.. just a slight tweak would fix that.

Some nice tips in my siggy links.

Re: Morning - C & C welcome!

The most detailed parts of the painting are the very-foreground grass and the far distant tree, which throws me off a little. I don't think the foreground trees work too well compositionally, 4 trees right next to each other in a row with similar, bare branches that are mostly too short.

I really like the water, buildings and the red roofs, I think the scene would benefit with some people or activity around the building.

I think it's a nice base layer for detail. Break out those detail brushes and well see you in a month

Hi JVM!
I'm very honored with your help.

I read all your posts on the forum. These articles are great and very explanatory. I'm slowly absorbing this valuable information, but I'll read it again, for sure.

I'll study this composition more. At first the drawing would have only two more antlered trees and their respective foliage. At some point in my mind I decided on this idea. I'll try to make the necessary changes.

Alan,

Just an observation, not a crit, but the foreground trees have bare branches while the distant tree and grasses are very green indicating Spring or Summer.

Ah!!! I see that you have painted something from your mind's eye. A way to improve your painting would be to lighten the sky around the top CENTER of the buildings, then to lighten the water underneath that, (a little in the grass too) . Also, lighten the tops of your trees, just because they are closer to the light, it doesn't matter that this might not be present in you reference, its just an observation. You could benefit from utilizing negative space, looks great!!!
What you needed was a light source!!! It doesn't necessarily have to be the sun. Rembrandt utilized many light sources.
